If indeed the plane was shot down, it probably is a mistake in the fog of war. Most of the passengers on the plane were Iranians.
The possibility of a mistaken missile shot is possible, nobody here denied it. The problem is the western country, both government and MSM quickly jump to a convenient conclusion just a day after the crash when the debris are not collected yet. It is a very apparent attempt to distract the attention and control and direct the public sensation and opinion to paint a reckless image on Iran, in the mean time to take the heat off the assassination.

If anyone propose this possibility a month later, that would be a honest act. But making a conclusion less than 48 hours, it is certainly a propagandist, REGARDLESS the eventual finding. Very often end doesn't justify the means.

The Iranian military mistakenly locked on to a plane that had just taken off from a busy Iranian airport and that the Iranian air controllers were still tracking on the radar?

Reading the deluge of western mouthpieces, every article is simply trusting the American claims without any kind of questioning of how they arrived at those conclusions. At least during the lead up to the Iraq War, Colin Powell still had to make Power Point presentations and hold up a vial of detergent. Seems nowadays, the US administration can just say something and western media will unquestioningly repeat it.
I think Mr. Powell will be remembered for that in the history even if his president were forgotten.

I want to wait for more info before making the call.
IF they are destroying the wreck that’s pretty sketchy. Someone has to access the boxes. I doubt the Iranians have access to the equipment needed for such. The FCR and investigation needs to happen preferably from an independent source. Complete with the wreckage.

The Flight recorders addresses what happened inside the plane. that is normally in two forms the voice recorder that records conversation and radio calls even alarm tones. The digital recorder records systems power status, settings and data. They help paint a picture of the events inside the plane but it’s not complete.

The plane wreck holds forensics on what was physically happening. The causes what the displays or cockpit was saying. As such the data is used like an arrow to pinpoint where a problem may have been. When MA17 was shot down the Cockpit recorders which have multiple microphones around the cockpit picked up the sound of an explosion outside the cockpit using the multiple microphones they triangulated the point of the event outside the cockpit pilots side. They then looked around that spot on the wreck and at the autopsy of the pilot finding fragmentation from the warhead of a Buk Missile.
The black boxes are normally around the tail section of a crash as it’s one of the most likely parts to survive.

So this is what Iran says: (source CNN)
“If a rocket or missile hits a plane, it will free fall," Ali Abedzadeh told CNN.
He said once the plane took off, it continued flying for five minutes. Abedzadeh said “the pilot tried to return to the airport but failed.”

Abedzadeh went on to ask, “How can a plane be hit by rocket or missile” and then the pilot “try to turn back to the airport?”

This is very unfortunate. If this is indeed a video of a missile striking the airliner, then Iran needs to calm down and reassess its technological capabilities. 0:55 of the video:
I was impressed at their take-down of the Beast of Kandahar but if they cannot comfortably distinguish an airliner taking off from their own airport from an enemy drone strike, then throwing themselves at the US would be like an egg being thrown against a rock. As the old Chinese proverb goes, "A decade or more is not too late for a real man's vengeance." They should always remember the General's assassination and let it drive them and their students to become a power in military engineering (with collaboration from Russia and China if possible) and revisit this revenge when they are far more ready (and in sync with other allies that the US has antagonized). Don't be the boy who rushes at his parents' killers ending his own life in vain but be the boy who lets his desire for justice fuel him to grow into the man who can take his revenge.

If an aircraft is hit by a missile warhead it might fall then it might turn around and limp home. It all depends on how the damage is done and how much.
The Iranian take down of RQ170 is full of questions. And despite claims it’s clear that the drone they showed was damaged. For all we know it could be that they stumbled on a crashed drone.
As we know from Syria these types of systems are not fool proof and airliners are easy targets for Surface to air missile systems especially when the crew have itchy trigger fingers.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Iran shot down the plane by mistake.

Iran's military was probably on full alert at the time of firing the barrage of missiles against US bases in Iraq, and fear of an immediate US retaliation strike against targets in Iran was high. We also don't know which militia was operating these anti-aircraft batteries at the time and it could very well be possible that a poorly trained unit accidentally pulled the trigger in panic.

The greater chances are that the plane will fall off the sky if hit by a missile from a more capable SAM battery. With hand-held missiles, based on the videos on Youtube, the chances were always that the aircraft (helicopters) would start to go down if there was a hit.

We don't know if a hit by a hand-held missile may not cause an airliner to immediately crash but the same is not likely the case for a SAM battery.

Any information on the type of missiles?

We'll have to wait for the investigation to know exactly what happened.

The crash happened hours after the attack. The plane was taking off from an airport in Tehran. You don't think there would have been more than one plane taking off in the intervening time?

Why would Iranian military on alert for US retaliation lock on to a target that was flying in the opposite direction?
