They didn't ban google, but google decided to exit the Chinese market as they could not comply to Chinese regulations.

I still remember back when most of the internet (including amazon) was just http and almost nothing was https (so much so that EFF had a browser extension to remind/enforce https for everything) anyway back in the day Gmail only enforced https at the login page but then dropped it to http once the password was sent through, so its easy for any ISP, company, government to see the plaintext messages as they cross the wires... (well later they had added it as a Gmail Labs experimential feature that you could turn on if you were extra security minded etc) Google made a big deal out of this because allegedly the government of China was using this to read the emails of dissenters or whatever, (probably around the time a bunch of CIA agents all got caught in China!) and so pubicly announced they were gonna enforce https for everything gmail in China... I made the comment online at the time that this was a hypocritical move because Google was sending all of that information to the NSA anyway and besides even if they weren't, the US gov has all the master key encryption keys and full access at the root CA levels which defeat the TLS/SSL etc since they can decrypt it on-the-fly without even any brute forcing...(same way an SSL inspector works) I was called CCP shill and paranoid conspiracy theorists but turns out later on in 2013 Snowden revealed that Google had actually joined the NSA PRISM program back in 2008!
Essentially Google was handing everything to the US government but didn't want China to see any of it for their own people!
Erm...sounds like time for Huawei, OPPO, Xiaomi, VIVO etc all chinese makers to band together and launch a global appstore while shutting out Google Playstore from their smartphones. They together should hold more than half of the global smartphone market.
This has broad implications. The US basically aims fo cut China off from the American internet. No Chinese app or telecom or anything related to the internet will be allowed in America. And no American apps will be allowed in China.

At what point does China's lack of countering/retailiation become a long term strategic mistake? What happened to the rare earth ban that Xi hinted to during his visit to a plant last May? What happened to the Unreliable list that was being drawn up with Fedex package theft and Boeing MCAS fiasco being added to the list and now HSBC etc etc... what happened to hitting Apple hard or even kicking it out of China? Why is Tesla still allowed to roam free given Elon admitted to the CIA coup in Bolivia and Space-X being a strategic threat to China's own space program?
Is China waiting for the other foot to drop before taking massive action all at the same time? Does the CCP know something is in the works that the public doesn't? For example maybe America has already committed and decided to kick China out of SWIFT and/or attack the SCS or help Tiawan declare formal independence etc and China has already caught wind of it... much like high level Huawei officials already knew TSMC was gonna be forced by USA to severe ties this May before it was officially announced...

If Wechat were banned, it would be a tipping point where overseas Chinese flock to Huawei's app gallery or some other Chinese alternative, dropping Google and iphone. It would very much help the development of Chinese play-stores to end Google's dominance. I'm hearing from European users using the P40 that it doesn't take much getting used to before they don't miss Google anymore. It's just like needing a push before getting in the swimming pool. Wechat would be a big kick in the rear.
Yes, but all US has to do theoritically is hypothetically another "Gulf of Tonkin 2.0"-isque action in or near the SCS/ ESC regions as pretext/guise/pretense to ostensibly fight China and force nations of the world, its allies, vassals and even innocent nuetral bistanders alike etc to pick/choose sides, and since US has the military upperhand, many smaller nations may well go with US again...
And this all plays into the Pompeo propaganda of "CLEAN" nations... an alliance of "CLEAN Nations" as a fortress to defend against the evil/dirty CCP/China, basically trying to get the whole world to dump China software/tech/apps and to wall off China...
So this isn't just American isolationism Qing style, America is isolating itself and ALSO forcing the whole rest of the world to be brought into it, thereby effectively isolating China!
This is not Cold War containment. This is roll back! America aims to roll back china’s tech ambition not just in America, but everywhere. Pompeo next stop is trying to convince eastern and Central European countries to ban Chinese tech.
It knows that if it can contain China for another 15-20 years, Chinese demographics, aging population, global warming, would keep China busy internally. By then China won’t have the appetite to challenge America anymore.
America is playing the long game. China needs to think outside the box.
