Miscellaneous News

Thats big news. It seems that a good agreement has been reached

Hopefully everything goes smoothly

Btw It seems that the US has just fulfilled one of China's demands when China gave the US a list of "grievances". Biden number 1 !!
Beijing Joe number 1.

If true and it plays out smoothly, Meng should sue Canadian Government for abduction. Surely Canada has to pay for lost income and expenses, + damages in mental anguish and reputation.

Canadian Media say that she will plead guilty

Chinese tech executive Meng Wanzhou is expected to appear virtually in an American federal courtroom today to plead guilty in the U.S. proceedings against her, say sources.
If it is true, then that isnt good. China has resisted for a long time similar agreements in the past. At least the punishment is going to be a simple fine so thats a win.

However, this is Canadian Media, so this might be them trying to spin the news.

We will soon see what is true and what is not. Personally I hope I dont see her pleading guilty.

So the US wont jail her, but instead fine her?

I dont get it. If they drop the banking and wire fraud, what is left to charge Huawei with ?

Canada illegally infringed on her human rights and freedom for 3 years over nothing. And China should sanction Canada imports for an equal length of period as a punishment for being the instigator.
The best course for China would be to

1. Try to help sweep some things under the carpet like looking away from Huawei treatment by Canada. Trudeau will certainly do some Saber rattling for ensuring he defends the assault by Anti-China right wing.

2. Make sure that China does not release the two Michaels of Canada and come out as a country with questionable rule of law. The two Michaels should be given a proper trial as per Chinese law and punished if found guilty. No quid pro quo.

It will be interesting to see...
When news of being close to a deal was percolating couple weeks ago I was thinking it would be HSBC style settlement.
Huawei will pay some kind of nominal fine, but nobody is "admitting fault" or actually "guilty".

As for Canada-China relationships, it was always the USA that was the instigator. Don't forget that Trump was using his own sanctions against Canada (blocking exports of steel and aluminum and 'tearing up NAFTA') to get his way.

EDIT:
Just saw that CBC news that said she will plead "Guilty"
If they drop the fraud charges, it will probably be something stupid like guilty of making a crappy powerpoint or something so the US can call themselves the winner.

It is partially true.
Here is an excerpt from the WSJ article:

The agreement, which is expected to be entered in court later Friday, will require Ms. Meng to admit to some wrongdoing in exchange for prosecutors deferring and later dropping wire and bank fraud charges, the people said. She is scheduled to appear in federal court in Brooklyn Friday afternoon remotely from Canada.

Despite proclaiming its governed be law and order, the arrest of Mrs Meng is technically illegal to begin with. She was technically in a grey zone when she was arrested, which means she was technically on Canadian soil when she’s waiting for transit flight to Mexico, but she never gone through the custom (custom transit area at international airport is bit like no mans land), so legally RCMP has no jurisdiction to arrest her.
However, Canadian border services has jurisdiction over where she was, but CBSA can’t carry out arrest over the US request, so CBSA detente her for an extended time and perhaps illegally requested informations from her and later turned them over to RCMP. But given she probably never intent to go through the custom, so this is where the dispute came whether her arrest by RCMP is even legal.

But given the same year 2018 after the 5-eyes Halifax security conference, a joint effort of all out frontal assault on Huawei started from the 5-eye alliance and till her arrest in December of the same year, most rational people can probably draw their own conclusions on this affair.
