Taiwan did not receive an invite to WHA, and thus they are blocked five years running. Despite all the noise G7 were making when it came to time to either nut up or shut up all of them shut up.
So why did this happen? I thought it about it and can come up with 4 reasons, two practical and two political:
Practical:
1. You have organisations like Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China asking for Taiwan's inclusion in WHA - can you be any more transparent in your political motives? WHA and WHO are you know, trying to solve actual problems like an ongoing global pandemic, it's not a place for your political grandstanding
2. What help can Taiwan bring to WHA/WHO? Are they a vaccine producing power house? Diagnostic kits? PPE? Do they have any pandemic prevention tips they can share? Oh right, they're staring at a potential major domestic outbreak due to very poor hotel quarantine measures as we speak
Political:
3. China is by a wide margin the largest exporter of COVID-19 vaccines at this time and it seems unlikely to change. If you piss China off then COVAX can kiss their supply of vaccine goodbye as China will then do it alone and dictate who on this planet gets vaccine and who doesn't. I'm sure that would do wonders for WHO credibility if that were to happen and WHO is clearly aware of this
4. Through recent struggles with the west China have discovered a critical, perhaps even insurrmountable weakness of "democracy" as practised today - politicians all want a big fat payout after they leave the seats. These paychecks and cushy jobs come from big international companies. And if you want to be somebody in the business field you have to do business with China. By holding Chinese sanction as a sword above their heads everyone is frightened and no one wants to stick their neck out and be the next Pompeo.
Thus across all of G7 - a group of countries making up more than half of the worlds GDP - not one person dared to actually step forward and invite Taiwan to WHA.
