When the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) started the FX-2 project to acquire modern fighter planes, the plan was to re-equip with at least 100 aircraft. In 2014, the then president of the Coordination Committee of the Combat Aircraft Program (COPAC), Brigadier José Augusto Affonso Crepaldi, even claimed that the FAB was studying to acquire a total of 108 aircraft to replace the current fleet of combat aircraft. Since then, the Force has signed a contract with the Swedish company Saab for only 36 aircraft and has no certain date for the expansion of the fleet. In an exclusive interview with the Defense and Security Industry (ID & S), the Brazilian Air Force commander, Luiz brigada Nivaldo Rossato, detailing the Gripen project and the country's defense strategy at the moment.

ID & S: In what kind of operations will the Gripen be used?

Brig. Rossato: The Gripen is a multi-purpose aircraft, capable of performing air defense and ground attack capability. One of the key differentiating factors of the aircraft is including the ability to perform several different actions on the same flight.

ID & S: The initial Gripen order is expected to deliver 36 systems, but there is no agreement on whether this amount will be extended. Are there plans to acquire a greater number of Gripen? Are thirty-six aircraft sufficient for Brazil's air defense?

Brig. Rossato: The order of 36 units is sufficient for initial demand, to replace the Mirage aircraft. It is noteworthy that the Gripen will initially operate alongside the F-5 and A-1 fighters. In the future these two other models will need a replacement.

ID & S: The FAB acquired36 Gripen. This figure responds to the need of Brazil in times of peace?

Brig. Rossato: The number is adequate for the current operational need, remembering that these aircraft will operate alongside the F-5 and A-1 fleets, which in future also need to be replaced.

ID & S: In times of war, how many planes would Brazil have to dispose of?

Brig. Rossato: The answer depends mainly on the stage. In this case, the Brazilian Air Force is now working with an analysis of specific capabilities, and the "Air Force 100" design on strategic capabilities ready to be acquired or maintained by the FAB, which has been sought through Various acquisition and modernization projects.

ID & S: If Brazil needs to rapidly increase the number of Gripen to enter into a conflict, is this possible through the contract with Saab?

Brig. Rossato: Brazil will have the capacity to produce a significant portion of the Gripen aircraft in Brazil.

ID & S: The basis of the Gripen is in Brasilia. If there is any threat to the pre-salt, would the Gripen be used for this purpose? And for the defense of the Amazon, will this change be possible?

Brig. Rossato: The base is actually in Annapolis (GO). To this question, it is important to emphasize mobility as one of the main characteristics of an air force. A Gripen aircraft not only has autonomy of about 1,000 km from its base, but also can be resupplied in flight and thus multiply its reach. In addition, other airstrips throughout the country, whether on air bases or not, are suitable for the operation of these fighters, which can also be supported on land with a logistical support aircraft and transportable infrastructure. Such a change is already commonly used by the Brazilian Air Force with other aircraft models, which has already been carried out, including road-operating exercises. I want to emphasize that one of the characteristics of the Gripen is the simplicity to be operated.

ID & S: With Gripen, do we consider Brazil as the best equipped country in Latin America?

Brig. Rossato: It can be said that Brazil will have a multi-purpose hunting of the latest generation that will allow the fulfillment of all combat tasks of aviation.

ID & S: What percentage of the FAB budget is committed to maintaining the Gripen fleet?

Brig. Rossato: The cost of operating the military aircraft is classified information. However, we can report that the Gripen is characterized by an operating cost of the aircraft within our expectations

ID & S: The Gripen was introduced last year in Sweden and a replica was displayed in several places in Brazil. What is the purpose of the FAB with these exhibitions?

Brigade Nivaldo Luiz Rossato: In addition to the release of the Air Force, the objective is to demonstrate the high technology that is developing with the participation of Brazil, and the profits that will contribute to the Brazilian Air Force and the country. In matters of defense, it is essential to have the necessary support for strategic projects, through the National Congress.

I think it is pandemic in all South America (except Chile). Argentina canceled all its modernization programs and new purchases. See:
