Always wondering what a Chinese derivative of the American AC130 gunship armnament would consist of??? And which platform the weapons would be installed on.

Ideally prototype to test weapons would be on the Y-8 and then when weapons are given the green light then install them on the Y-9 for further testing.

Weapons used would be from existing armnament already available in the PLA:
2x QJG02 Single Barrel 14.5mm
1x ZPT90 25mm Cannon
1x PL96 122mm Howitzwer

They'd be useful in the South with all the trees there. But I wouldn't waste them on new planes. These planes operate at low altitude and there's no need for cabin pressurisation. Old planes are enough for this IMO.

That would be a good export product.

Though there aren't very many insurgents in the south that the PLA seems bothered about.

Of course, but if PLAAF is going to deploy them anywhere at all, I would guess that the South gets them first.

BTW, what's the biggest caliber of cannon that a Y-7 based model can take?

Well the largest calibre cannon possibly can be fitted onto a Y-7 platform may not be the most ideal, cause it can be to heavey for the aircraft structure and its enourmous recoil the larger cannon has might rip the structure apart. So it isn't really the biggest possible cannon a Y-7 can hold but the most suitable one. But maybe you can fit the absolute biggest cannon possible if you find a way in reducing the enourmous recoil. If the PLA reduce the budget on a gunship concept I wouldn't use the Y-7 platform but the Y-8 Category 3 one. Its got a better performance and extended range and flight time. Giving further air support duration for its ground forcem for clearing advancing convoys or well dug in enemy foward line. In the South mountain ranges of China.
