9mm Chinese Police Revolver

This little double action revolver has been around for years now. Does anybody have an actual name for it yet?

This revolver replaces the Type 64 and Type 77 in service with various Chinese police forces. The idea behind it is for a simple, reliable and light firearm that has enough power to take down a criminal but is insufficient enough to tear through body armour as it seems the police have had a problem recently with their firearms falling into the hands of criminals. So basically a firearm issued for normal patrol carrying.

And because this is a revolver it can fire a wider range of ammunition the a pistol.

why would China need to copy another nations firearms? China more then enough capable in firearms now, especially pistols. They've got the QSZ-92 which is flexible coming with either 5.8 or 9 version. Revolvers require less maintenance, ease of use and higher tolerance to malfunction. Hong Kong has been having this long debate about semi and revolvers for quite some time now, on which one should be the main sidearm for officers.

There are very few gun wielding criminals on Chinese streets, so patrol and traffic police officers don't really need something with large magazine capacity for full on gun battles, so a revolver is cheaper, easier to maintain, and you only need to pull the trigger again if there was a misfire.

I think the revolver was meant to adopted en mass for the public safety 公安 which most of them are unarmed. Too bad there is not estimated of the cost of the weapon, but from the "look" of it it seems to be cheaper in price and enough of a deterrent.

It might have been cheaper to use an existing cartridge like a .38 special instead of developing a proprietary one, just seems a bit redundant.

Point of having a proprietary cartridge is that if the gun falls into criminal or civilian hands, getting ammo for it (of the armor piercing kind) will be harder.
