Any idea what is that opening for? Doesn't look like it's for RHIBs since those are just behind the highlighted opening.
Don't know. Engine room ventilation perhaps. Or auxiliary air intake/exhaust.

I looked at the photo from Zhonghua Hudong shipyard in Shanghai, the type 054B is equiped with Type 1130 H/PJ-14 CIWS with radar on the left-hand side, same as those on type 054A and type 052D.

Need a satellite pic so this mystery of the midship armament (VLS or not) can be resolved. Kinda wished PLA would be a bit tad more transparent about simple things but nope.
US intel probably knows by now. Won't it be funny if they released a report on the 054B detailing stuff they think would be on it.

Does the satellite pics from the construction phase show a penetrating space mid-ship?
I recall the earlier pics show penetrating spaces for the exhaust, the gun and the forward VLS, but not mid-ship.
I agree a new top pic would settle this once and for all
The navalists at Cdr Salamander's blogspot were unenthused with their new frigate in a (JP, US, UK) and for that matter their Navy and the government-industry organizations building and sustaining it. The problems are known; the causes are known; the corrections are known; and the impossibility of achieving those corrections is known. An unhappy Navy (as is the Coast Guard ). Including the Type 054B in the comparison would be devastating.
