039G1 mention

Seems to be edited out of the latest article revision. Seems like Dong Feng is doubting about this.

The G1 variant is indeed visually identifiable. The majority of the Song subs are indeed of the G1 rather than the G.

How to tell a G from a G1?

The G1 has only a single line of sink holes near the front bow. The G has three lines.

The G has a continuous sink hole line behind the sail. In the G1 it is staggered.

The back of the G model where the sail meets the hull is webbed and shaped with a curve. The back of the G1 model where the sail meets the hull is just plain straight.

321, 322, 323 are G models. Anything else beyond that have been G1s. Pictures of the Gs are much more rarer. Much of the pics you see are of the G1s.

Hi, that's a nice one. I did have some difficulties identifying the G1 from G.

I'll get the page updated

Some adjustments.

The referred sink hole lines near the bow are the ones with a diagonal incline. G = 3 lines; G1 = only 1 line.

The sail of the G is also slightly webbed in the front where the sail meets the hull. On the G1 it is a straight corner.

As a note, the older models have a slight webbed curve in the back corner of the sail where the sail meets the hull. And as I said, the G1 changes this to a straight corner.

However, later pictures now reveal that even these older models have that corner changed to a straight one. This leaves the sink hole pattern to be the most reliable way to tell between the older and newer Songs. Presumably, 320 may already have a converted sail since the stepped tower has never been seen again in recent pictures.

Later pictures are now revealing Songs have white markings to indicate warnings for their flank sonars, so the tugs won't damage them, and a modified rear end on the tail, which maybe for a towed hyrdophone.

it's interesting the flank sonars on Song are vertical rather than horizontal like the ones on 093. I'd think you can probably fit two of those horizontal ones on each side.

I also find it very interesting that the Yuan actually has four white markings on each side, indicating four flank sonar locations per side.

really? I just see the one on each side? It looks like the bow markings, except it doesn't go the whole way around.

here.

As a note, one of the reasons why I suspect the Yuan was conceived is to have a sub that can share common sonar systems with the 093. Having similar hull curvatures and shapes help.
