Yep by the time you attempt to SLEP those rusty old birds from 6,000 to 9,000 hrs, pull fuel tanks, fix the OBOGS, which alone nearly killed the HE
Reading it 6000 hrs to 10000 after F-18 retired too dangerous :D
3 millions the F-18 enough cheaper.

The F-18 is currently in a very intense maintenance crisis, both the Hornet, which is horrible, and the Super Hornet which is newer and doing a little better. The legacy Hornet has atrocious corrosion issues, as it wasn't expected to be in service as long as it has, and did not receive the best corrosion protections as a cost saving measure.

Who would have dreamed it would have outlasted the F-14 at the time??
