The first film was released in 1977, simply with the title Star Wars but was later given an additional title of Episode IV: A New Hope. The franchise comprises of an initial three films released between 1977 and 1983, the later two titled Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. In 1999 the franchise returned, with the first of the three episodes of a prequel trilogy. Episode I: The Phantom Menace told the story of Anakin Skywalker's childhood – the father of Luke Skywalker. The following two episodes, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, showed Anakin's journey towards becoming a Jedi before being consumed by the dark side and transforming into Darth Vader.

He was played by Jeremy Bulloch, an English actor who has also appeared in Robin of Sherwood, Summer Holiday and two Doctor Who stories.
