One Thing I am thankful for they are actually returning to writing TV series again and not Reality TV. I just started coming back to Tv recently with Gotham, Arrow and Flash. And thus far I have been impressed, Yes I know those are Comic book and All DC based but There is some originality to them and there takes off the established Characters.
Particularly I have been very very impressed with Gothams take on Young Commissioner Gordon and Alfred Pennyworth. In previous movies, Live action and Animated Batman series these two were often forgotten as part of the set. The Batman Begins and Dark knight movies brought them to the front, but Gotham is really putting Jim Gordon's struggle to keep Gotham from ripping it's self apart on the screen in a real human story, and Sean Pertwee ( the Son of the Actor made Famous for playing the Third Doctor) is really doing a great job bringing Alfred from simple butler to sudden substitute Father of a Orphaned and now troubled Heir to the Wayne Empire.
I also want to give kudo's the young actor playing Bruce and Oliver Queen as well as there Writers for Gotham and Arrow they are creating a real Damaged individuals devising unique coping methods. Oliver taking up the Bow and Young Bruce at times becoming self destructive and that great scene where You see Bruce listening to goth Rock and doodling nightmarishly grotesque images in the margins that was brilliantly Goth and perfectly fits a young man who one day will don Cape and Cowl as the ultimate Goth.

I also think the recent TV series, like The Walking Dead, Arrow and Flash, are of high quality. I am pleasantly surprised that CW can actually whip up some high quality series like The Arrow. 24 is still my favorite, but these new shows are also not bad at all. The 12 monkeys is an excellent movie. I can't wait to see how they turn it into a TV show. I am actually surprised tat they waited this long to do a TV show on it. It has such a depth that it can be expanded so many ways. We will see. It has a lot of potential.

The Description given in trek is that all waste organic or otherwise is processed via the ships transporters and replicators and stored aboard ship in a inert form. when a object is ordered it is assembled by reorganizing the matter at the molecular level. Translation Super Scifi Alchemy.
But don't get to hung up on that. TOS seemed to use prepackaged and on ship prepared foods using onboard conventional stores
Enterprise A had a kitchen
And a hydroponics is mentioned a number of times of TNG
on DS9 Sisco is stated as growing his own vegetables
and on Voy 7of9's cargo bay has a number of plants growing in hydroponics
Enterprise has repeated mentions of stasis pods of food and a cook aboard. Trip states that the waste materials are used for boots and uniforms meaning it's used to create a rapid prototyping raw material.
A few years back there was Talk of a number of processes to convert waste using microbes and fungi.

Well yes, that would make sense. You can't just keep recycling waste, you need sources of additional organic matter, and plants are one of the best ways of converting energy into organic matter (provided enough oxygen and CO2).

Converting waste into food using microbes and fungi? I think they call that agriculture. ;)

and if you have the room to do that it would work, Could do it on the Death Star no issue... hard to do on the Starship Enterprise though.

You could, if you used different organisms.

A hydroponics bay, for example, can do this with fish. Very little space would be required, just enough energy and nutrients.

The next level up would be corn + chickens. With a bit more space, you could do soy beans + pigs.

Here's my preferred method:

Step One: mix feces with hay and spread on a field.

Step Two: wait a couple of months, then mix resulting compost into soil. Scatter hay seeds.

Step Three: wait a few more months, then introduce young cow to field.

Step Four: wait for cow to grow up, then kill cow and extract meat.

10% rule still applies though.
