STIRLING, Australia - The Los Angeles class fast attack submarine USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) partnered with the Royal Australian Navy in March to strengthen its warfare capabilities through an annual joint exercise, Lungfish 2015.

Lungfish 2015 is a tactical development exercise between the two navies that trains and teaches tracking methods of both nuclear and diesel submarines.

In a direct response to the U.S. Pacific Fleet's priority to enhance anti-submarine warfare abilities, the submarine's crew participated in two anti-submarine missions and joint submarine command courses while deployed to Perth, Australia. The joint exercises allowed for the U.S. Navy to learn and gain knowledge from the Australian diesel submarine HMAS Rankin.

In addition to the skills developed, the week long exercise strengthened the ties between the United States and Royal Australian navies.

"There is no substitute for this experience," said Lt. Cmdr. Chris Brown, Albuquerque's executive officer. "You can simulate this in a trainer, but it is quite different when you have a top-of-the-line diesel submarine being expertly operated by its crew. You really get a chance to see how you perform under pressure."

Albuquerque is the nineteenth ship in its class and is homeported in San Diego, California. The ship is capable of supporting a variety of missions including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, strike, intelligence collection and mine warfare.

The Alburquerue is a Flight I Los Angeles class nuclear attack submarine that was commissioned in 1983, 32 years ago. She is still in active service.

The Rankin is the last of the Collins class diesel electric boats, and was commissioned in 2003, twelve years ago.

The nuclear boat has a lot of advantages...but you can also see the improvements in hull form that the Collins class benefits from being built 20 years after the Alburquerue.

This thread will be about Non-Chinese Diesel/Electric Submarines that are in service.

Collins, Kilos, Soryu, etc.

General news should remain in the Military News Thread from the country of origin (ie Australia for Collins...or Japan for Soryu). but detailed information about these subs can be discussed here.

March 17, 2015 - Defence and security company Saab welcomes the Swedish Minister of Defence, Peter Hultqvist’s, announcement to invest in two submarines of the next generation, A26, of a total amount of SEK 8,2 billion. The Swedish minister made the announcement in Karlskrona, Sweden.

Today, the Swedish Minister of Defence, Peter Hultqvist, announced that the government, on Thursday, intends to give a mandate to the Armed Forces to order two submarines.
Saab has not received any order on production of the new submarine but Saab looks forward to the discussions, which will lead to an agreement and order for A26. This will be a part of an earlier signed Letter of Intent.

Saab and FMV (The Swedish Defence Material Administration) signed a Letter of Intent in June 2014 regarding the Swedish Armed Forces’ underwater capability for the period 2015-2024. The Letter of Intent comprises support, development, design and production of submarines and other underwater systems, corresponding to potential orders of approximately SEK 11.2 billion, provided that necessary decisions are made.

You know these subs are going to be nice. Two bad they are only looking at two of the, Perhaps they will make them available for export?

The new kilo type 636.3 is supposedly very quiet (if not the quietness) and has a top speed of 20 knots termed "the black hole". A very formidable addition to the Russian fleet

March 15, 2015: Russia has nearly completed sea trials for the second and third (of six) new Type 636.3 Varshavyanka class of diesel-electric submarines. The first of these subs (the Novorossiysk) entered service in late 2014 and is to be stationed in Crimea. The other three are under construction as are six of the older Kilo models for Vietnam. The 636.3 boats are basically a much upgraded version of the Kilo class subs. The Varshavyanka have stealthy features and a top underwater speed of 36 kilometers an hour. The crew of 52 can stay at sea for up to 45 days at a time. Armament consists of 18 torpedoes or missiles plus eight surface-to-air missiles.

The six new 636.3 boats will give Russia 25 Kilos with another seven retired but in reserve (can be restored to active duty). In addition nearly 40 have been exported (delivered or under construction) All are the same displacement (about 2,300 tons) and size (70-74 meters/227-240 feet) and all have six 533mm torpedo tubes. All Kilos are very similar to the world-standard diesel submarine, the 1,800-ton German Type 209. The Kilo is a formidable attack submarine and has been continually upgraded with better mechanical and electronic systems since first introduced in the early 1980s.

I will 4 Gotland class more. Six submarines in Fleet season 2023-2024. 30 year in service is enough for swedish submarines. Only USA and Russia have more year ago for same variant like in Sweden.
