Soviet Muna Class trawlers - a strange case

You know this reminds me of the old Russian fishing trawlers. I think I'll have to dig up a picture now but one for sure looked perfectly safe above the waterline but featured a sonar dome and torpedo tube on her keel.
I'll try to post a picture of her tomorrow.

From the Top she is a normal trawler
but take a look at under the water line you see that bulge on the port side of the bow.

You are looking down the barrel of a Torpedo tube.

Wow... it's like Little Red Riding Hood in "disguised-as-an-innocent" harmless girl but have a chopper under her sleeves to chop up any unsupicious wolves...

Looks like a Q-ship.

Though enemy ELINT would probably notice any transmission of fire control data from an dedicated ASW platform to the "trawler", unless you intend to relay only on passive detection methods.

sneaky but could backfire because if commercial looking trawlers have these type of disguised weaponry then ALL trawlers of similar types will be fair game in an actual shooting war.

As to the 20,000 fishing boat idea I think it is just not feasible both economically or logistically not to mention easily countered or break assuming it's even put into actual practice. I can't believe we actually have 4 pages talking about this.. LOL

Besides who is going to catch the fish if all the big boats are out casting heavy duty anti sub nets??:p

Yup, Thats the trouble If just one has the Torpedo Tubes and is known Then the whole fleet might as well.

actually the structure in-between the tubes is a sonar she plots her own solution.

TerraN_Empire's pics of the Russian trawler with the Torpedo tubes IMHO, has made it all worth it.

That would be worth a thread of its own in the Military History forum.

How many did the Soviets build like this?

Where were they deployed?

Were any of those trawlers tailing US carrier groups or other US vessels back in the day these bad boys?

At the time did the US know of their armament?

Lots of good discussion could go on reagarding this juicy morsel of history! LOL!

It would have to be one suspiciously fast disguised trawler to tail a naval vessel.

Yes, the US most certainly knew of the armament. In one of the annual reviews of Soviet military power publications from around mid 1980s I remember a photo of a soviet trawler sitting in dry dock, with one of the torpedo tube outer hatches visibly open.
