World Maritime News said:
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world’s biggest shipbuilder, today held a launch ceremony for its fifth frigate, ROKS Jeonbuk.

The launch ceremony was attended by the Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Mr. Hwang Ki-chul, governor of Northern Jeolla Province Mr. Kim Wan-ju, Hyundai Heavy’s president & CEO Mr. Lee Jai-seong and other government and military officials in Ulsan shipyard.

The Jeonbuk frigate has greatly improved capabilities with its weapon and sensors including new 3-D radar, antiaircraft & antiship missiles, and sonar & torpedo acoustic counter measures. In addition, the vessel uses stealth technology to minimize the exposure to electromagnetic waves. More than 90% of major equipment is locally developed and sourced.

The 2,300 tonne frigate, measuring 114 m long, 14 m wide, and 25 m deep, can sail at a maximum speed of 30 knots with a crew of 120. The frigate will be delivered to the Korean Navy in December 2014.

The Ulsan, South Korea-based shipbuilder delivered the ROKS Incheon in January this year and is also currently building the 3rd frigate, ROKS Gyeonggi scheduled to be delivered in October 2014.

Since constructing and delivering its first Korean-built frigate ROKS Ulsan in 1980, Hyundai Heavy has grown as a leading naval shipbuilder by delivering 63 naval ships including the first and the third Korean Aegis destroyers, 3 KDX-II destroyers, 5 frigates, 3 submarines, and 29 patrol·salvage ships.

These are very modern, very capable, multi-purpose guided missile frigates. They plan to build at least 15 of these vessels, and perhaps as many as 24. So far they have these:

FFG-811 Incheon Launched: April 2011 Commission: Jan 2013
FFG-812 Gyeonggi Launched: July 2013 Commssion: Oct 2014
FFG-813 Jeonbuk Launched: November 2013 Commission: Dec 2014

Here are their specs:

Displacement: 3,250 tons (Full Load)
Length: 374 ft.
Beam: 46 ft.
Draft: 13 ft.
Propulsion: CODOG, 2 shafts
2 × MTU 20V 956 TB92 diesel engine
2 × GE LM2500 gas turbine[1]
Speed: 30 knots
Range: 5,000 mile:
Crew: 40
Armament:
1 x Mk-45 Mod 4 127mm/62 cal. DP gun
1 x 20 mm Phalanx CIWS
1 x RAM Block 1 (21 round launcher)
2 x 4 SSM-700K Hae Sung anti-ship missiles
4 x Hyunmoo-3 cruise missiles
2 x 3 K745 LW Blue Shark torpedoes
Aircraft: Landing Pad and Hanger
1 x SH-60 or Super Lynx ASW/SAR helicopter

A good ASW loadout with the helo, very decent CIWS with the Phalnx and RAM, and 8 anti-shipping missiles and 4 Land attack cruise missiles, and the 5" gun. Very decently outfitted.

And let's not forget the 10 year, one million mile warranty! brat

I think he was being facetious comparing how chinese fighters are immediately derided as copies... Or at least I think he is

Bingo!

do you need a cough drop?
there is a resemblance between this concept and F35 but this concept its to small its like some one put a lightning in the dryer and left it a little to long. , also note the cockpit and spine of the bird are different. Spine of a F35 is quite pronounced and the canopy of the cockpit blends into it where this has a raptor like canopy. Its wings are also smaller. And if you read the article it seems more like they are looking to create a three way hybrid F16C block60+ engines, probably T50 three barrel 20mm cannon KAI radar and electronics crammed into a shrunk lightning like hull. I doubt that you are going to see much in the way of internal weapons carry due to the size limitations instead it may come with external weapons pods perhaps with semi recessed hard points.

True, but it's still a copy (although smaller version) as in looks and design of the F-35 with mostly US tech in it.

South Korea decided to buy 40 F-35 with an option to buy 20 more aircraft.

They decided to reduce number from 60 to 40 (with option to buy 20 more if they find enough funds ) to fit into budget of $7.7 billion . Therefore , price of the single F-35A would be well above $150 million .

Depends what all is included in the deal. My guess is that there will be significant funds in there for training, spare parts, etc. which would have to be purchased separately anyway, and would therefore lower the overall cost per aircraft.

We will know more should they release those details once a deal is struck.

Yes , but same things would have been included in F-15SE deal for around $100million per plane . There is no point in beating around the bush , F-35 is very expensive plane - it better be worth all that money .

It is expensive. Clearly the ROK Military feels it is worth it...they went to great lengths to get the deal.

Time will tell if it actually is.

Personally, I believe the F-35 will end up being the modern F-16 and will be very widely exported.

A question came to my mind: What would be the "value" of F-35 compared to Su-27 (and to F-15 and F-22), in the sense "defined" in http://www.sinodefenceforum.com/air-force/mathematical-model-air-air-combat-loses-6641.html (in particular, you can guess its attrition coefficient :) would it be closer to that for F-15, or for F-22?)
