It is a mistaken notion to believe that by giving aircraft, warships etc. to a number of ASEAN countries means a likely security coalition would be eventually be formed. Some major countries may try to instigate "hostilities" in the region, but it would probably not work. President Duarte of the Philippines who is the ASEAN Chair in the recent group's meeting stressed on PEACE and economic progress in the region. This included having good relations with China; and the South-China Sea contentious issues will be worked out bi-laterally and peacefully. This is OUR region - the priority is to trade with everyone nation globally, as ASEAN's economic progress/growth are priorities. Most ASEAN countries I believe would not be naïve to pay serious attention to rhetoric by any major or medium powers.

Yes, there will be a Naval Fleet Review on Monday 15 May 2017, to celebrate the RSN 50th Anniversary. I believe about 20+ warships will be participating in the Review, including from PLA-N, USN, Japan, Malaysia, Australia etc. The Reviewing Officer is Singapore's President Tony Tan. I reckon there will be several Navy Chiefs and Senior Naval/Military Officers attending this Review - the first time when there is a large assembly of warships from the various countries. Also on 16-18 May, there will be IMDEX (International Maritime Defence Exhibition). Ships from PLA-N, USN, Malaysia, Thailand and other countries will berthed near the exhibition site, and will be opened to the public. I attended IMDEX 2 years ago, and it was the first time I went on board a PLA-N ship. I was impressed by the smartness of the PLA-N sailors at the gangway, and the courtesy shown by the Chinese Officers. Incidentally, during my time in the early 60s, the Singapore Naval Volunteer Reserve had 2 wooden patrol boats, and 1 WW II Japanese Minelayer that was commandeered and given to us by the RN - it was a replacement of our Corvette that was sunk by Japanese aircraft on 13 Feb 1942, during the invasion of Singapore. The RSN has gone a long way since the early days of the Naval Volunteer Reserve (Singapore Division).
