RSS Independence Retires After Close to Two Decades of Distinguished Service

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) decommissioned the first of its Fearless-class Patrol Vessels (PV), RSS Independence, at a sunset ceremony at Tuas Naval Base this evening. Officiated by Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral (RADM) Lai Chung Han, the ceremony marked the start of the progressive handing over of duties from the PVs, which have been operational starting from 1996, to the new Littoral Mission Vessels (LMV).

RSS Independence and its sister ships were the first warships wholly designed and built in Singapore, under a collaborative effort by the RSN, the Defence Technology Community, and the local defence industry. RSS Independence was commissioned on 22 Aug 1998 by then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, to take over the operational duties of Patrol Craft RSS Independence to safeguard Singapore's maritime interests and territorial integrity. RSS Independence had valiantly taken on the duties since then and was involved in numerous operations at sea, as well as in maritime surveillance, patrol and escort operations. It also participated in numerous bilateral and multilateral exercises with foreign navies.

Speaking at the ceremony, RADM Lai paid tribute to RSS Independence and to the generations of its crew members. He said, 'In her years of service, RSS Independence was an integral part of the RSN's frontline force which protected Singapore's territorial waters and safeguarded our sea lines of communication, staying true to her motto "We Will Defend". The success of RSS Independence would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication, professionalism, tenacity and sacrifice of the generations of officers and crews who have served on-board. The RSN salutes RSS Independence for her two decades of faithful service. The qualities and values she represented, as well as her steadfast contributions she has made, shall continue to inspire the men and women of the RSN for generations to come'.

The name RSS Independence along with its operational duties will be handed over to the LMV Independence during a commissioning ceremony on 5 May 2017, to be held in conjunction with the RSN's 50th anniversary celebrations. The LMVs are faster, more versatile, and equipped with sharper capabilities to further strengthen the RSN's effectiveness in seaward defence, and the protection of Singapore's sea lines of communication. The RSN's fleet of LMVs will be fully operational by 2020.
Also present at the decommissioning ceremony were past and present crew members of RSS Independence as well as senior RSN officers

Bangladesh Navy is set to start its journey as a “three-dimensional force” as two submarines are going to be added to its fleet for the first time on Sunday.

“The commissioning of two submarines procured from China will be held at a special ceremony in the area adjacent to Chittagong naval jetty in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” according to a press invitation issued by Inter Services Press Relation office.

A ship brought Bangladesh’s first submarines named “Nabajatra” and “Joyjatra” to Chittagong Port from China on December 22 last year. The submarines were handed over to Bangladesh on November 14.

The Type 035G-class submarines were assembled at Chinese state-owned Liaonan shipyard in the Dalian state.

Bangladesh paid a reported $203m for the submarines, a deal that reflects the country’s growing economic and defence ties with Beijing.

The submarines, also known as Ming-class, are a class of diesel-electric submarines of the People’s Liberation Army Navy. A total of 12 were built and commissioned between 1990 and 1999. They are 76 metres in length and 7.6 metres in width.

The naval personnel of both the countries completed a sea trial and real training to operate the submarines, an ISPR release said after their arrival in Chittagong.

The primary weaponry for Type 035G is the Yu-3 torpedo. It uses French-made sonar DUUX-5 unit. The 035G-class is also renowned for its anti-submarine weapon capabilities.

They were built with further improvements, especially in terms of noise reduction, weapons, sensors and crew living standards.

The Type 035G is frequently used for coastal patrols. Bangladesh has about 118,813 sq km of maritime territory, much of it won in disputes with India and Myanmar.

The Heron 1 drone declared operational in Singapore

The Air Force of the Republic of Singapore (RSAF) declared the full operational capability of its Heron 1 drones on 15 March 2017. The vehicles operate within the 119th and 128th squadrons of the RSAF.
The Heron 1 of IAI (Israel Aerospace Industries) has a range of 24 hours and a range of 200 km. It is equipped with an electro-optical system.

This statement means that RSAF personnel are now fully trained and qualified to operate, maintain and deploy the Heron 1 throughout its spectrum of capabilities. The Heron 1 was received in 2012 by Singapore, so the rise of the units will have been quite slow. According to the local press, a large number of exercises were carried out to develop the concepts of use of the device. The Singapore press says that Heron can operate in collaboration with helicopters. Heron of the RSAF were deployed in the United States for Exercise Forging Saber.

The Heron is replacing the Searcher drone in the Singapore air force, which had been in service since 1994. The RSAF is also equipped with the Hermes 450 (14 hours of autonomy), also of Israeli origin.
