South China Sea Strategies for other nations (Not China)

Beijing warns of war in South China Sea and urges military, police and public to prepare
US is trying to encircle China and China is pushing back, so the heated words are not unexpected nor exceptional. In fact, I've seen recent articles from US and Australian sources are even more alarmist. Bottom line is the two sides are learning to deal with each other, so we'll see lots of saber rattling until both sides reach new equilibrium.

I hear it all the time but still I don't know US did to 'encircle' China in recent years? They keep the same old allies, they aren't building anything new in the area and Pacific Ocean was always their main point in their foreign policy for more than a century...

Help me understand this 'Chinese' way of thinking and narrative.

Vietnam's Man-Made Islands Don't Have Our Staying Power, China Says

Chinese websites have published satellite pictures of Vietnam's alleged island-building activities in the South China Sea, drawing attention to their comparative lack of success.

Chinese websites have published satellite images that appear to show Vietnam's construction of artificial islands in the Spratly archipelago, but also that its efforts ended up being washed away by the sea.

On February 2 China Youth Network published pictures of Vietnam's alleged land reclamation on Cornwallis South Reef, which it called "China's Nanhua Reef."

The publication follows pictures that were published by Chinese website Baike in December, which show the whole of the reef, including the area of reclamation.

The most recent images appear to show two islands that were built by dredging sand, which then lost their battle with the tide.

"However, Vietnam's low levels of technology eventually led to the sand being washed away in a storm, and almost no progress," China Youth Network commented on Vietnam's attempts at building islands.

"In December last year typhoon Jasmine suddenly visited, which upset the Vietnamese calculations – the filled reefs were blown away by the typhoon," the website reported.

It triumphantly contrasted China's "more efficient" method of dredging up sand by using self-propelled cutter suction dredgers, rather than using a backhoe dredger like Vietnam.

"Constructing reefs is not as simple as it looks," China Youth Network concluded.

"It is very complex engineering, a test of a country's power. Not everyone can turn a small reef into an offshore airport like China."

China Daily also reported on the surfacing of the images, and entitled the story "Typhoon Blows Away Illegal Island Made by Vietnam in South China Sea."

"Typhoons are rarely seen in the region during December. It seems this Jasmine one at the end of 2015 was less than expected for Vietnam. Satellite photos taken on April 4, 2015, show that Vietnam had begun illegal construction to build a manmade island on China's Nanhua Reef," China Daily wrote.

After the reports surfaced on February 2 Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang was asked about the government's response to Vietnam's attempts at constructing the two islands in part of the South China Sea that is claimed by China.

"We have reiterated on many occasions our position on the issue of the South China Sea," Lu Kang said.

"We have indisputable sovereignty over islands in the South China Sea and their adjacent waters. This position remains unchanged. We maintain that disputes with neighboring countries over the Nansha Islands should be resolved through bilateral and friendly consultations."

China, and also Taiwan, claim that all of the Spratly Islands and the nearby Paracel archipegalo are located within its territorial waters in the South China Sea. However, Vietnam also claims ownership of the islands, and that it has ruled over them at least since the 17th century.

The Philippines and Malaysia also claim that some of the Spratly Islands are located within their territorial waters, and Brunei claims some territory in the South China Sea.

I don't know the "Chinese way of thinking," but I could give you an American way. We're pretty straightforward people, so it's 1+1=2. What's that you say? The Pivot; Vietnam being our new BFF; reactivation of bases in the Philippine; talking up China threat domestically and around the world; urging current friends and allies to increase or upgrade defense against Chinese "provocations;" attempted veto of AIIB; TPP; cozying up to Mongolia; failed efforts to ally India; failed efforts to ensnare Indian involvement in SCS disputes. There are probably much more encirclement efforts that aren't in the public arena.

1+1= 2

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said it has deployed another vessel to conduct routine patrol in the West Philippine Sea near Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal.PCG spokesperson Commander Armand Balilo said that aside from the 56-meter BRP Pampanga, the 35-meter BRP Nueva Vizcaya would join the patrol in the disputed waters. BRP Pampanga started its patrol in the area last month. “The tour of duty of each ship would last for five days. They would be there for law enforcement patrol against poaching and other lawless activities,” said Balilo. The Coast Guard official added that they are leaving it up to the commanding officer of the two ships to determine how far they would conduct patrols.Zambales is the closest province to the disputed Panatag Shoal, which is also called Bajo de Masinloc. The shoal is 124 nautical miles west of Zambales and is within the country’s 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone.

What of it? As long as Philippines CCG and Navy vessels stay out of Chinese territory, it's free to sail in international waters of the South China Sea. To be clear, I mean Philippine's EEZ stops half-way with Taiping island EEZ. Full stop.

Taiping island EEZ.
But PRC does not administer Taiping island, Taiwan does.

Anyway it looks as if tit for tat is happening.

Exclusive: Vietnam moves new rocket launchers into disputed South China Sea - sources

Vietnam has discreetly fortified several of its islands in the disputed South China Sea with new mobile rocket launchers capable of striking China's runways and military installations across the vital trade route, according to Western officials.

Diplomats and military officers told Reuters that intelligence shows Hanoi has shipped the launchers from the Vietnamese mainland into position on five bases in the Spratly islands in recent months, a move likely to raise tensions with Beijing.

The launchers have been hidden from aerial surveillance and they have yet to be armed, but could be made operational with rocket artillery rounds within two or three days, according to the three sources.

Vietnam's Foreign Ministry said the information was "inaccurate", without elaborating.

Deputy Defence Minister, Senior Lieutenant-General Nguyen Chi Vinh, told Reuters in Singapore in June that Hanoi had no such launchers or weapons ready in the Spratlys but reserved the right to take any such measures.

"It is within our legitimate right to self-defense to move any of our weapons to any area at any time within our sovereign territory," he said......... to read more

East China Sea: Japan Spots Chinese Radar on Gas Exploration Platform
Does the radar suggest the creeping militarization of gas platforms in the East China Sea?

in the East China Sea, where, starting Friday, multiple Chinese Coast Guard and fishing vessels entered waters disputed between China and Japan.

Japan has filed repeated protests with China over the coast guard vessels which entered territorial waters around the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands.

Adding to tensions in the East China Sea, a Japanese foreign ministry spokesman noted on Sunday that authorities in Tokyo discovered that China had installed radar equipment on a gas platform, near disputed waters.

According to the foreign ministry spokesperson, Japan determined that China had installed a radar earlier this summer, in late June.

Japan “cannot accept” the radar, the foreign ministry spokesman noted,

. “We call for the immediate removal of the equipment,” he said.

The Japanese discovery of a radar on board a gas platform has stoked fears that China may be converting its gas exploration platforms for partial military use.

I believe Philippines which already have overlapping EEZ with Taiwan would just negotiate with them and give a mid-finger salute towards PRC.

And you can keep on dreaming.

LoL, a nation throwing a hys-fit over THAAD being deployed in SK.

China and Russia both object to the deployment of THAAD in SK. Japan has not made any friends in Russia by supporting this move.

In the end, American actions are just pushing China and Russia closer together. The US is half a world away, but Japan is gonna get pretty uncomfortable.
