South Atlantic War, or Falkland/Malvinas Conflict

They would only be propaganda if they were untrue. The photos were unaltered, undoctored and if anything show the surrender of the Royal Marines as it happened. There was no apparent mistreatment of the Marines and the surrender was in accordance with the Geneva Convention. Such photos go a long way to preventing allegations of mistreatment which may arise later. It was merely the fact that British troops had been forced to surrender that stung the nations pride. Those very same Royal Marines were sent back to the islands with the Task Force and were given the honour of being the first into the capital Port Stanley at the end of the war.

Forgive the misuse of the word propaganda. My intent was to use it in a form as follows: The photographs were used to galvanize public opinion and generate shock that young British service men were humiliated.

Another definition of propaganda, as in this case, was intended to unify against a misdeed as opposed to a misinformation campaign

All true. Propaganda was originally used merely to mean information from official sources, but Herr Goebbels changed to popular interpretation of the term forever. They most certainly were used to galvanise public opinion. No arguments there. I remember seeing those newspapers and TV reports at the time (I was 12) and still recall the feelings around at the time. In Britain there was a prevailing culture that we didn't lose wars, and we didn't back down from a fight we saw as just.

Perhaps a war is needed once in a while to remind everyone that it's not fun and games, it's not like the movies, and when people get shot they don't get back up when someone calls 'cut'.

I was visiting a friend (this last weekend) that served on the ARA Hercules in 1982 and he let me scan some pictures Part 1.
