This was one of the earliest proposals for a 5th gen fighter ironically which came from SAC. 1st appeared in 1997 IIRC. It was meant to be an F-22 equivalent and had many short comings. And off-course CAC completely crashed SAC's party

Here are some of the early wind-tunnel models. You immediately notice several problems:

Seems like this design doesn't consider rearside stealth very much.

Actually that design only considers frontal stealth. Beyond frontal there way too many 90' angles. SAC design went through several changes for J-XX. After the canard tri-plane was rejected the final refinement appears to be - see attachment below; This goes back to the more conventional layout but with all-aspect stealth. Either way PLAAF was not impressed.

Is it me or does this design resemble a stealth version of J-8II?

Il semblerait que ce soit la première fois que l'on voit l'ouverture de soute ventrale du FC-31 en vol, extrait d'une vidéo d'AVIC.

It would seem that this is the first time we see the opening of cargo of the CF-31 in flight, from a video of AVIC.
