Not really if you look carefully. The front control panel below the HUD (the protruding piece with a small screen surrounded by buttons and keypad) is different, the main display layout is also different.

The J-20 uses two large vertical displays on the left and right side of the front control panel. Below the front control panel is some unknown stuff and then another large vertical display that is slanted towards the pilot, occupying the between leg space since the stick has been moved to the side.

For the FC-31 you can see they use large horizontal screens, and the front control panel has less buttons, it doesn't seem to have a number keypad.

I assume he knew the picture was from FC-31 #1, and was just commenting that it looks like the one on J-20.

Actually I think similarity in cockpit interface is much more significant between planes from the same design institute (i.e. Chengdu vs Shenyang), rather than between J-20 and FC-31. The J-20 interface, from what we can see now, looks a lot like the one on J-10B/C:

The HUD and front control panel are pretty much identical, vertical MFD layout is also very similar, the same 3 MFD layout can be traced back to JF-17 thunder. The lower parts (which we could not see) may be different due to center vs side stick.

I wonder if FC-31's front control panel and horizontal MFD setup is similar to those used on newer Chinese flankers. Unfortunately there is no picture to compare to. At least the Su-35 has a similar MFD layout.

Look at the canopy. J-20's canopy is one piece, FC-31 v1 is two piece.

That's basic stuff...


The cockpit of multiple similar recent Chinese fighters look similar when only looking at the HUD. J-11B, J-10B/C, J-16, J-15, FC-31v1 and J-20 2001 and 2002 all seem to share the same HUD design, and from that angle the top bit of the MFDs in the cockpit all appear fairly similar too
