Do you have solid evidence to back your claim, regarding your claim "never been tested in reality..."? No...I thought so. Also have you ever seen the inside of the DF-21D to compare it to the Pershing? No...I thought so. Like I said before the Pershing couldn't even match the DF-21D in speed and guidance system during rentry of the atmosphere flight.

S ducts also create air flow disturbances, in fact the reason Boeing and Sukhoi went for straight ducts has to do with efficiency and weight.

Another facet of the study of flow in S-duct is flow control because these ducts find
practical application as aircraft air-intake ducts. The trend in modern fighter aircraft is to
have a short and highly curved S-shaped intake duct. The short length reduces the structural
weight of the aircraft and increases the internal space packaging efficiency. However, the
shortening of the duct results in a highly curved duct profile while still maintaining the
correct offset of the engine fan face (housed in the fuselage) and the intake entrance face (at
the exterior of the fuselage). Although the short intake duct is highly desirable for its
compactness and weight reduction, it is aerodynamically inefficient, as it is highly susceptible
to massive flow separation. In addition, the flow is coupled with bulk swirl with the presence
of stream-wise vortices. These flow features lead to total pressure losses in the duct, flow
distortion at the duct exit and hence flow non-uniformity at the engine fan face.

The diffusing S-duct is a typical aircraft inlet geometry. It decelerates air entering the compressor and
increases the static pressure. The Lockheed Matin F-16 has a chin-type S-duct and Korean advanced
supersonic trainer T-50 has a bifurcated S-duct.
A well designed diffusing S-duct can help to enhance engine performance by delivering a nearly
uniform flow with a small transverse velocity component at the engine compressor entrance. But the
centerline curvature associated with the S-duct makes a centrifugal force and cross-stream pressure
gradient between the bottom and the top of S-duct.
As a result the diffusing S-duct integrates the
complex 3-dimensional internal flow which includes secondary flows and flow separation. Wellborn
et al. [1] performed a compressible subsonic flow experiment through a representative S-duct
configuration and investigated the complicated flow mechanism in detail. The baseline diffuser of our
design corresponds to the experimental configuration of Wellborn et al.
The aerodynamic performance of subsonic diffusers is principally determined by two
parameters; the flow distortion at the outlet of the diffuser and the total pressure recovery. If the flow
distortion is reduced and the total pressure recovery is close to one, it can be considered to be welldesigned.

Both the commercial and the military aircrafts generally use the S-ducts to deliver the captured flow from far field to the engine compressor. From the structural and aerodynamic point of view, it is more effective the length of inlet is short. S-duct air inlets are very commonly used on cruise missiles. In order to reduce the missile observability
and mass and to increase the volume of fuel tanks, their geometry is more and more constrained. Their design
is optimized for cruise flight conditions. During high-g maneuvers, external conditions and forebody interactions
can produce large separations leading to important pressure losses, high compressor face distortion,
with the risk of compressor instabilities

Aircraft performance strongly influences this selection as does the internal fuselage structure and available space, for example, inside the fuselage. Aircraft stealth requirements seem to demand highly curved intake ducts that are prone to more or less heavy flow separations.

Having a discusssion with the likes of Mig-29 and NikeX is pointless. They are the human analog version of a denial of service attack. All they're here to do is flood threads with repetitive, digressive, irrelevent posts. You will never convince them of anything. They're here solely for the purpose of being the pride police and they want to kill any thread that hints of pride for China especially for recent achievements. Now I see the same old ASBM arguments being made in here? Ran out of repetitive nonsense about Chinese stealth fighters already so you have to dig up stuff from other threads now? You can see it has nothing to do with a healthy discussion and everything to do with putting the Chinese in their place. What it's like is an abuser? They beat their wife or girlfriend and fill her with thoughts that she's no good and she'll never be anything without him. For what? Control. It's brainwashing. The abuser has to put it in the head that she is nothing and could do nothing without him therefore she will never leave or do anything against and even be protective of him from others because she cannot survive without him. Notice the same themes here?

Has Mig-29 or NikeX personally been innovative and contributed to the world to which they say China cannot? We already know that answer. So what's their excuse for being just like the Chinese they look down at for not being innovative? Every Chinese will come across someone who says it in their face. And you ask them what's their excuse since they have what Beijing denies from the Chinese people. By that conclusion they're worse than the Chinese and they certainly do steal someone elses achievement as if it was their own. Why is it that the vast vast vast vast majority of Westerners aren't just like Steve Jobs? Then you have to ask why is it that Steve Jobs and his few peers by themselves are only lauded if everyone in the West is so innovative? If their supposed values are different from the Chinese, why did Japan back in the 70s and 80s go through the same accusations made of China when in fact the model it was written from comes from them. They have democracy and supposed respect for freedom yet not creative and can only copy as charged. The Japanese back then was everything they say China isn't today. Maybe because like NikeX said, it's all DNA. Then we go back to why are they in here? It isn't for a healthy discussion like they guise their posts as. It's everything that's the opposite.

They aren't satisfied knowing that the Chinese will just be fools in the end? Believing yourself to be superior is easy. Making others believe it is all the battle. And they haven't won that battle and it pisses them off. Look at the Japanese and South Koreans. They had a stealth fighter... on paper. But they too, as they were taught, believe only the few elite can master this achievement so they were satisfied that they can just hide behind someone elses achievement as if it was their own too. Enter the J-20... panic around the world. It isn't enough that they believe it'll still be inferior to theirs. They thought it was impossible for the Chinese yet it happened. Is it about stealth fighters? No. It's about everything they believe about their own sense of superiority and why everyone else is inferior is now in question.

The Japanese and South Koreans have the F-35 and any other future stealth fighter available to them. So why have their stealth programs now been given priority. They talk about the J-20 and J-31 being rip-offs... The Japanese and South Korean programs aren't copies? They won't be dependent on support, knowledge, and purchasing components (including engines) from the West? Components of course that will be lesser versions of the best meaning inferior to the F-22 and F-35 in the end. The only difference from China is approval. So why build it when they can purchase straight from the best? It's all about putting the Chinese in their place. What kept the Japanese and South Koreans from carrying out their programs is what they're trying to force onto the Chinese. If China were just like Japan and South Korea, there would be no alarm over the J-20 and J-31 because the Chinese would've thought it was impossible too and felt satisfied being dependent on others. That's the whole objective because then the Chinese will accept inferiority and never think of doing anything that will be a threat to them.

The reason has more to do with simplicity. It is not impossible to achieve good performance with a serpentine inlet, but it takes a lot more effort than doing so with a straight one. Thus, the ability to employ an S-inlet on a fighter reflects a country's capabilities in aerospace technologies.

Aside from J-20, F-22 and F-35 also employ S-inlets. The lack of such inlet on the PAKFA is a sign that the designers didn't have the ability and funding to solve the technical challenges brought forth by the S-inlet. Sucking air through a radar blocker will reduce the efficiency of the engines, thus lowering the performance of the PAKFA.
