SCS Fleet Command China vs Japan scenario help

Hey, I'm trying to do a PLAN/JMSDF scenario for SCS Fleet Command's Naval Warfare Project.

Quick FYI on Fleet Command:
Fleet Command, previously labelled as Jane's Fleet Command, is a real-time tactics naval warfare simulation computer game released in 1999. It was developed by Sonalysts Inc. and published by Electronic Arts (EA). The game licensed parts of Jane's Information Group's military information database, which was used as an in-game "Jane's Library", reference material that the player could refer to while in-game. Jane's also licensed to EA the "Jane's" name and the "Jane's Combat Simulations" logo, and the game was marketed under the "Jane's" name, much like the previous "Jane's Fighters Anthology", also published by Electronic Arts. The game was also released in a three-game "Naval Combat Pack" along with 688(I) and F/A-18 Hornet.

This is a pretty fun game, but there are no scenarios that let you play as the Chinese side (although there are twenty or so that let you play against the Chinese ). Furthermore, most of the China scenarios are patently ludicrous, ridiculous, or out-of-date.

What I wanted to do was do a proper simulation of a Senkaku Islands battle, one that involved the East Sea Fleet and North Sea Fleet vs the JMSDF and possible USN or ROKN assets. Could the kind folks here give a brief run-down of the orbat and likely pre-battle fleet dispositions, as well as likely in-battle approach vectors and grand tactics?

Thanks so much!

The problem with Naval Warfare Project version of the game is that there appears to some sort of bug (intentional?) that cause all YJ series misslies to miss their target, even though the hit % in the database is 90%. Try it

It's actually not a bug with the YJ missiles themselves--it's a bugged value in the Chinese fire control radars

So, after a bit of horsing around in the game I have discovered thus:

USN carriers are damn near impossible to kill--unless you have DF-21Ds, in which case they become marginally easier targets.

The general rhythm of the game for the PLAN seems to be playing hide and seek in the first island chain, then poking out a few medal-seeking brave souls for a quick 10 minute 'radar glance' at the USN CVBG so that the DF-21D batteries can push out a hail of unblockable Mach 10 warheads. Because the warheads fly so fast, 10 minutes is really all you need to zone the carriers out of all the waters west of the Ryukyu Islands. Unfortunately, any forces you push out for that 'radar glance' get slammed by harpoons and tomahawks very quick. In this respect, I modeled the J-20 in and found it very useful--with a high-powered LPI radar, I was able to get sight of the CVBG at a longer range with a stealthier set of eyes, which was a real force multiplier for the rest of my fleet. I think this shows that the J-20, at least in the context of combined naval/air/space ops, works quite well as a stealthy, supercruising sensor platform for theater assets.

On the flip side, playing as the USN, it becomes imperative to maintain active CAP with F-18s and F/A-35s as soon as you can and across as deep of an arc as you can, since the J-20's radar can spot a Nimitz at nearly 150 nmi. The risk calculation is definitely a lot scarier if you're worried about losing your carrier--once, I steamed over a pair of PLAN SSKs, who kindly refrained from shooting at me until the DF-21Ds they were spotting for had already impacted into the John Paul Jones and the USS George Washington. Then they went kamikaze and took down one of my CGs. After that, the game got very painful very quick as Kadena basically got bear-hugged by four PLAN DDGs, who proceeded to autokill anything I sent into the sky. Then the air-launched standoff weapons began hitting and it was pretty much game over.

Overall, it pretty much boils down to this question: can the PLAN get eyes on the USN taskforce for long enough to smack it with land-based assets? If so, the rest of the naval fight becomes a real cakewalk as the PLAN will always have enough cheap FFGs, DDGs, and air-delivered stand-off weaponry left over to swarm Kadena and force a withdrawal.

I believe if the PLAN has had more stealthy high altitude long endurance UAV assets, the second artillery could rely on a reliable set of eyes and ears.

Although UAVs would be subject to enemy jamming. But this might not be different from manned J-20s whose datalinks are getting jammed.

Ergo, the PLA needs some more stealthy standoff detection means that are mobile and survivable enough to not be hammered preemtively (like static OTH radars would be).

i believe this is the kind of thread that we are actively discouraging, so please be careful to not inflame here.

So... I've finished the scenario and a ton of object file modding.

Rough US/Japan ORBAT:

USN/JMSDF:
2x CVN -- USS George Washington, USS Ronald Reagan -- loaded with 18 F-35s and 24 F/A-18Es each, plus E-2Ds and MH-60s
2x DDH -- Hyuga, Hiei loaded with MH-60s
~16x DDG -- Mostly Arleigh Burke-class
~14x FFG -- Oliver Hazard Perry-class
~8x SSN -- Virginia + Seawolf-class
~8x SSK -- Soryu-class
~4x SSGN -- Ohio-class
--Organized into 2 CVBGs and an ARG centered around the Hyuga and Hiei, with scattered SAGs and SSNs roaming around

USAF
1x AFB -- Kadena
24x F/A-22 (AAW and STK)
24x F/A-35 (RCN, AAW, and STK)
6x B-2 (STK and SUW)
6x B-1B (STK and SUW)
12x Predator drones

JASDF
1x AFB -- Naha
24x F-15J
12x F/A-35
--mostly AAM loadouts

JGSDF
6x MIM-104F Patriot batteries

Rough Chinese ORBAT:

PLAN
1x CATOBAR CV -- Fujian, loaded with 12 J-15s and 24 J-31s, plus Y-8 AEW, as well as Zhi-19 and Ka-27 Helos for ASW and rescue
1x STOBAR CV -- Liaoning, loaded with 12 J-15s and 12 J-31s, plus Zhi-19 and Ka-27 Helos for ASW and rescue
~22x DDG -- 12x Type 052C/D, 4x Type 055, 6x legacy (Type 051C, Type 052B)
~18x FFG -- mostly Type 054A and Type 054Bs
~6x SSN -- Type 095s
~2x SSGN -- Type 096s
~24x SSK -- Song, Yuan, Kilo, and Qing-class submarines

PLAAF
24x J-31 (AAW)
24x J-20 (AAW and STK)
48x J-16/11B (AAW and STK)
48x J-10B (SEAD and STK)
12x H-10 (basically a Tu-160 loaded with 12x YJ-12 anti-ship missiles and better sensors)

PLA 2nd Art
8x DF-21D batteries
6x HQ-19 batteries

As you can probably guess, the Chinese side has a definite material disadvantage, but it has the geographic advantage of internal lines of communication and an easy coastline along which to position land-based assets. I have the scenario and files ready; anyone who's interested can PM me for Fleet Command/NWP 19.2 download and installation instructions, as well as a dropbox link to the scenario files.

btw, the colors are switched here -- China is blue, USN/JMSDF is red

That is flawed ^^. I'll show you how. And yes I know this is a game.

3-4 CVNs..see Summer Pulse 2004

18-20x DDG -- ALL Arleigh Burke-class
3-4 Ticonderoga class CGs
Zero Oliver Hazard Perry class FFGs.. they don't deploy with CSG any longer and are being decommissioned with a quickness.
2x SSGN -- Ohio-class.. The USN has only four Ohio class SSGNs and hve no plans to convert any more.. By the way four Ohio class SSGNs could mission kill the PLAN before they left port. They pack 152 conventionally armed cruise missiles each.

For the USAF..someone forgot B-52s which will be in service for the foreseeable future.

Updated with modern technology the B-52 will be capable of delivering the full complement of joint developed weapons and will continue into the 21st century as an important element of our nation's defenses. Current engineering analyses show the B-52's life span to extend beyond the year 2040.

Ahh I dont see Anderson AFB or Hickam AFB or Osan AFB listed for the USAF.

Also was aerial refueling taken into consideration? I see no tankers listed for either side.

Just sayin'...And yes it's only a game..
