Russian Su-57 Aircraft Thread (PAK-FA and IAF FGFA)

PAK-FA is a very fine aerobatic aircraft, it will have to be stronger in order to resist the stress cracking that has grounded the proto-types several times. It is more honestly a 4.7 Gen aircraft, as it lacks L/O and EW in the F-22 league, but hey, it looks good, appears to fly very well, with some decent engines it will make a very fine fighter, but it wouldn't surprise me to see India make a play for the F-35.

last year's air force day press conference by the the Air Force Chief
the question was asked ast to what the air force would do if the FGFA fails

he said that he needs an FGFA only in 2030
and that FGFA will be the AMCA
see from 26:10

one reason that that the F35 won't be brought is because
that about 120 LCA's ( likely to rise to 200) and probably about 150 AMCA's will be powered by US engines that is about half of the IAF fighter fleet will stay on ground without spares if the US sanctions India in case of war.(has happened in the past)

if India goes for F35 it will be like taking all the eggs from the Russian basket and putting them in the US basket.

not going to happen.

as of now it seems that the eggs will be shared:)
and it is better that it remains that way

another reason,
from the the FGFA and MMRCA , the IAF has learned a valuable lesson that
self help is the best help
with their "we want the best onlee" attitude
neither the FGFA nor the Rafale are any where in IAF service
now as squardon numbers fall
they are left with screaming for production of the Tejas at a war footing,
a fighter which they derided publicly,
one air cheif once calling it a three legged cheetah.
others accusing it to be inferior to the Mig 21 it will replace.

you can see the change in attitude in the above video

No b787, you are "inaccurate", if you look up the fighter mafia, Pierre Sprey was a "defense analyst" like "Charlie" on "Top Gun", we was not an aircraft designer, engineer, nor pilot??? he was a "political hack to Robert McNamara, one of his co-conspirators, Col Riccici was sent to Korea to fly a desk, as punishment for their little "shell game"? no "combat experience" either.

Kind of like James Thurber's "Walter Mitty".
Pierre Sprey is an aircraft designer, defense analyst, and record producer. Working with John Boyd and Thomas P. Christie, analyst Tom Christie and test pilot Col. Everest Riccioni as well as aeronautical engineer Harry Hillaker, they formed the core of the self-dubbed “Fighter Mafia”, advocating the use of Energy-Maneuverability (E-M) theory in fighter design.

can you tell me your official sources? PAKFA has not been reported to have more than 055 been grounded, can you tell me when Sukhoi reported it has cracking troubles?

when was the Himalaya EW tested outside of Russia and against western systems?

can you tell me why Sukhoi built the Su-47 with S ducts and ventral weapons bays but decided to go for PAKFA?

You know who was chief designer of F-16? Harry Hillaker. Sprey hasn't designed anything and he also claimed in RT that Eurofighter is too heavy fighter to be good.

Funny how all your sources are either anti-F35 stories what need "credible sources" to bash F-35 or books about music.
small wing, small lift; big wing lots of lift, more thrust and lift tighter turn and better sustained turns

From what I have read, the Russians were not going to compromise performance over stealth. Priority was for speed (including supercruise) and super-maneuverability. Those 2 aspects were non-negotiable. Stealth is frontal optimized. The Russians could have done a more conventional design. TsAGI, SibNIA and many other institutes had tested many designs. Sukhoi even tested flat nozzle on a flanker. But those did not make it. The Russian requirements are not the same as US, China, India, etc. The PAK-FA from the start required large A-to-G munitions. It needs to carry Kh-58, KAB-1500, R-37M variants/derivatives internally. The F-22 style weapons bay was a non-starter.

this is part of the solution

LOL I haven't seen this type of heated discussions you guys are having here between fans of, say, Artillery (I guess they know if a duel ensues between Artillery Battalions, people get killed and equipment destroyed, no matter how good they are ... but yeah, they know parameters of the guns etc. etc.)
have fun, Aviators! :)

I'm not sure why you guys are arguing over semantics. No ONE person design the F16 or for that matter most aircraft for the last 50 years. A team design those aircraft. One can argue who made the most contribution to the actual design aspect however input is likely from everyone in the design team.

As to the F16, Hillaker was definitely the 'man' and may honestly contribute the 'most' however to be fair Sprey was certainly involved as well and so was AF pilot Maj. John Boyd who was not even an aeronautical engineer by trade but had tremendous input.
