Something normal folks would wear on their heads??? It is bulky, and it does look heavier than the F-35 helmet, which by the way was deemed too heavy, and it is undergoing redesign to further lighten it. A heavy helmet greatly increases the risk in the event of ejection as well, placing lots of strain on that quite fragile "neck". Why most current helmets use something similar to NASCARs HANs device to stabilize and support the head?

At some point the technology will exist to project the battlespace onto the inside of the canopy, and the helmet will go back to a simple HMS device for Look and Shoot.

But yes, no doubt that helmet is heavy.

One of the big selling points of HMS is thier ability, when paired with all aspect integrated optical sensors in the aircraft, to allow a pilot to keep visual track of a bandit even if he drops off the traditional line of sight of the canopy.

In effect, you are supposed to be able to see your target 'through' even the floor of your cockpit. Something not possible with using the entire canopy as a giant HUD. Although such technology may well be implemented, it will not replace the HMS, but rather supplement it.

What I see as a potential big weigh saver is if they did away with the secondary display lenses and just projected things directly only the inside of the visor, or directly onto the pilot's retina.

it is less than 2 kg, Russia`s electronics today are not that behind, it is at the most 4-5 years from the West`s mos advanced technology, this KRET`s HMS is less than 2 kg

Try to put a 2kg (not 2lb) weight on your head and tell us how long you can keep it there without hurting.

Wonder if something like Google glass makes more sense

i said less than 2 kg, and by the way, the F-35`s helmet is heavier than to 2 kg,
    • F-35 helmets will have to be redesigned to lower their weight
    • The weight reduction would diminish the risk of neck injuries during ejection for lightweight pilots
    The helmet for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter has to be redesigned because its weight increases the risk of injury during ejection for some pilots, the Pentagon's programme manager for the effort said on 21 October.

    The 5.4 lb (2.4 kg) helmets will have to be redesigned to reduce weight by 6 ounces, US Air Force (USAF) Lieutenant General Christopher Bogdan said during a House Armed Services Committee hearing. The weight reduction would lower the potential for neck injuries for lightweight pilots during ejection.

Regardless F-35 or PAKFA, their helmets seem to be pretty heavy. Their addition to a traditional helmet is virtual HUD as I understand. There are many civilian appliance like google glass essensially doing the same thing (virtual HUD) although much less capable. I found this video
about Holographic Eye Adaptive Display (HEAD) from SBG lab. It is claimed to be able to deliver HD (1920x1080?) see through image in a package in the form of normal eye glasses. From the video, it seems to be something like 100 to 200 grams. Isn't it a better choice?

If the traditional helmet is close to 2kg, a 200 grams additional wouldn't make much difference, but then nobody can blame the new helmet to be too heavy without blaming the traditional helmet being already heavy.

If the traditional helment is far below 2kg, then a 200 grams addon would be a much better solution.

What do you think?

You basically repeated what I had already said in my post, and I made the very specific point that the F-35 helmet is too heavy, though they only want to reduce the weight by 6 ounces. They give you exact numbers, but I would guarantee that the F-35 helmet has exceeded its design weight, and I am rather certain that the T-50 likely has as well???

I had a very heavy full face helmet that I wore for many years, I am rather certain that it was very close to the weight of the F-35 helmet, and many days I wore it for 3-5 hours, as I saw patients on my GSXR 1000 sport bike, I also wore a very heavy/hot ballistic jacket. The sport bike positions your body at a very steep forward swept angle, you had to tilt your head back to see traffic around you, and it was very tiring at times.

Due to that weight, and the weight of your upper body on your hands and wrists, it is rather unpleasant until you reach 75 to 80 MPH, then the lift developed takes that weight off your hands, wrists, and forearms, as well as providing lift to remove some of the perceived weight of the helmet. That is usually were I ran my bike once I was on the open road, I was very safe, but I did keep the wick turned up, one ticket in seven years, and I didn't lie, he asked if I knew how fast I was going, and I stated yes.

So the point is the helmets are too heavy, and too bulky, they are working on the weight, and eventually they will turn their attention to the bulk. A five pound helmet weighs ten pounds in a sixty degree bank, whether you are flying a T-50 or a Cessna 150.

and thank you very much for posting the link, it does affirm the real issue, and that the ejection is only an issue for "very light" pilots, but it does cause fatigue every day, so like taxiya said the helmets are heavy, but fighter pilots wear helmets to provide "protection" from impacts as well as wind blast in the event the canopy is damaged.
