Russian designations are well forgettable. normally a randomized combination of numerals and letters often used only by technical papers that rarely leave the military environment. There are some Russian nicknames but they are few far between used for a number of different systems many in the same class. Nato Code names were by contrast widely available published and memorable as well as narrow in scope to models and family's of systems Flanker E is a SU35 and not a Mig 29. it's not vague and it's easily modified to add in new models.
The Russians adopted them unofficially because they recognized the advantages and in some cases they felt it was a sign of there prowess and a badge of honor. Back in the early 90's I remember a documentary on the Russian Airforce Where they interviewed a Russian Pilot when asked about his plane he proudly said he flew a Fulcrum. He said he liked that it was called a Fulcrum because it was the point on which the Russian Fighting air forces would turn.
Now as to the AK47. AK47 technically are the First generation Production weapons made from 1946 to 1959 but there was a problem first production units were made with a stamped receiver, the Russians had not really mastered Stamped yet and there first Ak 47 batches had a very high rejection rate. So they switched to a different manufacturing method using a milled Forging. but this was still troubled this lead to a Third version with a milled receiver form steel bar stock. by 1959 the Russians Introduced the AKM series This featured a number of changes including switching back to a Stamped manufacturing as the Russians felt confident by that point in there Stamping. Ak47 is the predecessor of AKM and AKM is the basis for production of all modern AK. save for the AK107 and 108.

Russian designations are well forgettable. ...

thanks for your perspective, TE

EDIT
(the author of the "story I told" in my previous post didn't criticize using AK-47 in for example a translation of a foreign movie, but was appalled that the official designation wasn't used in professional journals -- this obviously wouldn't have happened in 1980s or earlier :)

Russia is building a new aircraft carrier its navy chief confirmed on Monday, according to reports in state-owned media outlets.

On Monday Itar-Tass News Agency

Viktor Chirkov, Russia’s top naval commander, announced Russia is building a new aircraft carrier.
"The Navy will have an aircraft carrier. The research companies are working on it, and strictly in compliance with the requirements from the Chief Commander," the reported quoted Chirkov as saying. Itar-Tass did not report any additional details except that Chirkov made the remarks while speaking to workers at the Kolomensky Zavod plant. The plant makes diesel electric engines for navy vessels. which makes diesel electric engines.

Russia currently has one operational aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov, which was launched by the Soviet Union in 1985. However, last month Russian media outlets

that the government-owned Krylov State Research Center was in the rudimentary stages of developing a new carrier-class for the Russian navy.

The reports said that the carrier was still in the conceptual phase of planning. However, when completed the new Russian aircraft carrier would reportedly be able to hold roughly 100 aircraft on board. That would make it 10 percent larger than America’s current Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, which can store roughly 90 aircraft carrier.

They want to make it the size of super carrier or bigger....

I think this is (as usual from the Russian Navy when speaking of future carriers) ... misleading.

They are not in the process of building anything as far as I can tell...nor, form this article do I expect them to for several years.

They say they "will" have one...and that the research companies are "working" on it. Hugely vague...but surely not currently "building."

AK and AK47 has sadly become a slang Catch all not just for any derivative of the design but in some cases any Assault rifle or automatic weapon. It drives me batty when I hear AK 47 used in such a loose fashion by the media. Last year well Listening to a Nationally syndicated Radio program I personally corrected the radio host over twitter when he said NYPD used AK47's to his credit the radio host corrected himself and gave me a shout out for it.

It's interesting that both the Russian and the Chinese are looking to building a new Aircraft Carrier. I have also read they want something NEW and Large, I wonder how both will eventually look and operate. The Ulyanovsk design (

) would be a good start but as most people know that both countries can easily surprise everyone. Can't wait to see what develops. If anyone has a drawing or anything don't forget to share...

, Russia has a similar ongoing program known as the the PAK-DA. Now, after years of requirements changes, it appears that a blended wing, subsonic design, much like the one pictured above, will be the new jet's overall configuration.

The PAK-DA, which literally means "prospective aviation complex for long-range aviation," is Russia's next generation long-range bomber project and it aims to one day replace the

Much like America's next generation bomber, which has gone from a very high-end concept to one with more limited goals over the last decade, mainly due to affordability concerns, the PAK-DA has also lowered its performance and capabilities expectations, although to an even greater degree over a similar span of time.

Originally, the jet was supposed to be not only stealthy but insanely fast, with officials stating at one time that it would be a "

." Even if this was embellishment or some sort of misstatement, it was clear that originally the PAK-DA was meant to super-cruise at high mach speeds. This requirement has now changed drastically as it is now confirmed that the PAK-DA will be a subsonic aircraft, with a design more focused on long-range and heavily payload lifting capabilities than anything else.

A blended wing-body design, loosely similar to

Like the T-50 fighter's low-observability, or stealth, the PAK-DA's radar signature will most likely be balanced against cost and design risk. In fact, many signs are pointing to the fact that the aircraft's configuration will have similar characteristics to the PAK-FA fighter, including a large blended wing/lifting body design, multiple ventral weapons bays and relatively small canted twin tails.

The legendary Tupolev Design Bureau is said to

Basic stats for Russia's subsonic new bomber are still not totally certain, but an empty weight of around 125 tons with an additional 30 ton payload and range of around 7,500 miles seems to be roughly what the new design is shooting for.

Also like America's next generation bomber saga, Russia has pushed back the entry date of its new bomber design multiple times, but a target date for a first flight and entrance into service was announced
