Vietnam is doing a very decent job in building up its Navy.

Those Gephard FFGs, the IMproved Kilos, the new Molniya (which are advanced Tarantul with 16 ASMs each), etc.

Not something to be trifled with, particularly when within range of their land based air and all of those modern SU-30s.

Yeah but still the Vietnamese are 0-2 against the PLAN in their last naval conflicts even with superior fire power and ships back in the 1970s and early 80s. Weapons are nothing without the competent men and officers to yield them effectively. Now I'm not saying I look forward to seeing another Sino-Vietnam conflict but IMO it's a waste of time and money protecting rocks, shores, or islands that belonged to someone else.

I would agree with you on Vietnamese superior firepower and vessels for the 1974 conflict but for the one in 1988, those Vietnamese ships aren't professional at all with some were landing ships while the others were modified merchant ships. 64 Vietnamese soldiers got killed under the 37mm canons with only one Chinese soldier injured.

very interesting view of a Buyan-M:

The missile systems were spotted on the road to St. Petersburg in Novgorod region. The design of Bastion-P allows it to float force to destroy enemy ships in all weather conditions, even in noisy environments enhanced electron.

Just for for excercise both.
Rgt based to Feodosia as all SAM Rgts on 2/3 sites, S-400 replace S-300PM2 but in general Bat with 8 remains in more the 16 S-400 with also 6 Pantsir the best Short Range SAM used especialy for protect the TEL's during it moves more small, fast to react.
The S-300PM2 replace out presumably more old variants PS or PM.

History is what it is...but at those time frames, the Vietnamese were not prepared or able to use what they had and it told in the outcomes.

Times have changed for both Navies that regard.

Everythig I have heard, some of it from friend in the US Navy, tells me that the Vietnamese Navy has made great strides in its professionalism and capabilities.

The vessels they are putting together could not hope to prevail against the entire PLAN fleet...but they are not meant to.

They are meant to send a message that if the PLAN wants to resort to force, the Vietnamese would make it very expensive for them.

As to who is protecting whose rocks and islands, I am sure that the same could be said against both sides by the other. IOW, the Vietnamese think that they are defending their own rocks and islands...the Chinese think that they are theirs...and that is the whole crux of the matter.

Vietnam is spending money to bolster and punctuate its interpretation and feelings about the islands they do posses...just as China is doing with those she posses.
