the Su-34 is so badass. it's like the devils plane. forget about the Su-35, china should buy a regiment of this instead. yes i know, the Su-35 is supposed to be the most advanced flanker, but i just have a crush on the Su-34. imagine it painted in PLANAF/PLAAF scheme.

The Hellduck is a beasty birdy worthy of respect, but I think the PLA has moved beyond it.

They have a vast fleet of JH7As, Su30s, an ever growing fleet of UCAVs and soon J16s that can fill the same role as the Su34.

The PLA's sights are now set on next gen strikers and bombers. Almost certain stealthy, maybe also very fast.

Yes...there is no doubt that the PRC has developed their own trajectory for strike aircraft...and they are indigenous.

The JH-7A is stilla very good aircraft and there continue to be rumors of a JH-7B.

The J-16 is going to be the follow-on Chinese strike aircraft.

They are developing it so they can build it themselves. It will be a Chinese improvement over the SU-30s they have, much as the J-11B is over the SU-27s, and the J-15 is over the SU-33.

I do not see any reason for them to opt for the SU-34 at this point.

I would expect the JH7B to be mainly an avionics and radar updated version of the JH7A, maybe with updated engines.

I do not expect much if any structural improvements, other than maybe some limited internal strengthening to allow it to carry the newer beasty missiles like the YJ12 etc.

A Su-34-class aircraft was indeed under study by 601, but for reasons unknown the project had either been cancelled or superseded by the rumored "H-18".

Doesn't exactly fit any "right spots", kinda of a 1/2 this and 1/2 that, but definitely kool? China seems to have the Flanker fitted out with the J-16 for that kind of work?? IMHO?

sorry I hadn't seen the previous two posts, but Mr. Head has it nailed!

The SU-35 is for air superiority and is equipped and configured for that role. it is far better at that than the SU-34 would be. I am sure that they could add the targeting and capability for the SU-35 to ground pound...but that would not make the most of its real expertise.

The SU-34 is for strike missions and is configured and equipped for that. We knew it would be, and now it is showing itself to be outstanding at that. It can carry air to air as well so it can very ably defend itself...but to arm it for air superiority would also waist its most effective role.

Russia is wise to procure both...they will provide a very strongly together whenever needed..

Send in 12 SU-34s to pound the enemy, and protect them with a flight of six SU-35s.

That would be a very powerful and capable force package...and only the very most advanced opponents could challenge it...and even they would have to respect tit.

That's my take on it as well. I've mentioned in my previous post assuming that the J18 picture is indicative of a potential su34 'clone' for plan it would be a very formidable asset in the SCS and fits right in with China's strategic plan of dominion over that area.

A long range strike fighter like that is perfect to patrol and protect naval assets and SLOCs especially if based off those artificial islands once they are up and running.

Yes...but I believe that the SU-35/SU-34 is going to remain a Russian package only.

I believe that the PLAN could come very close to the same results with a mix of J-15/JH-7B mix

And the PLAAF with a J-11B/J-16 and ultimately it a J-20/J-16 mix.
