I don't think Russia is merely "considering" air strikes as President Putin stated, that consideration was made a long time ago and a decision has already been reached.

Russia is just laying the ground work before executing that decision now.

And from the scope of those preparations, you can tell that the Russians really mean business. When their air strikes begin, it is going to be intensive and sustained, in contrast to the almost token pot shots the western air forces have largely taken thus far.

I think if the Russians wanted to, they could have started bombing operations days or even weeks ago. They are waiting on something.

That something could be Assad's ground forces to get organised for a big push to fully capitalise on the Russia tac air support, Iranian ground forces, or more significant players to make up their mind on whether of not to join the party...

Well, Su-34s are most modern bombers Russia has . I don't think they brought them here merely to drop dumb bombs like Syrian air force is doing for years now . If the news is true, then it means that Russians plan to use latest weapons in their possession , and to force solution trough fighting .

the Su-34 is so bad. Forget about the Su-35, china should buy a regiment of this instead. yes.
The SU-35 is for air superiority and is equipped and configured for that role. it is far better at that than the SU-34 would be. I am sure that they could add the targeting and capability for the SU-35 to ground pound...but that would not make the most of its real expertise.

The SU-34 is for strike missions and is configured and equipped for that. We knew it would be, and now it is showing itself to be outstanding at that. It can carry air to air as well so it can very ably defend itself...but to arm it for air superiority would also waist its most effective role.

Russia is wise to procure both...they will provide a very strongly together whenever needed..

Send in 12 SU-34s to pound the enemy, and protect them with a flight of six SU-35s.

That would be a very powerful and capable force package...and only the very most advanced opponents could challenge it...and even they would have to respect tit.

the Su-34 is so badass. it's like the devils plane. forget about the Su-35, china should buy a regiment of this instead. yes i know, the Su-35 is supposed to be the most advanced flanker, but i just have a crush on the Su-34. imagine it painted in PLANAF/PLAAF scheme.

A Su-34-class aircraft was indeed under study by 601, but for reasons unknown the project had either been cancelled or superseded by the rumored "H-18".
