This is the engine on the Airbus that made the news recently with the extreme vibration and the pilot making the controversial call in asking the passengers to pray for their lives

This again highlights the importance of material science and WHY jet engines are so extremely challenging to make.

Fan blades are typicaly made from nickel copper superalloys grown from a single crystal to maintain superior strengh and integrity but even then they fracture and break like this RR engine here..

Newer fans are made from ceramic fiber composities like zirconium hafnium carbide and the latest tech in turbofans like the hot chamber include using some super exotic materials like graphene like stringy polymers infused with carbon nanotubes.

Hey, all pilots pray! especially when you start throwing fan blades,,, the old saying is there are "no atheists in fox-holes",,,, when death appears to be a likelihood, the smart guys are going to cry out to their God!

Look at Jonah! the sailors asked him to pray!
