I'm actually convinced the round came from the left side of the picture.

The case in point is the sequence of pictures posted by AssassinsMaze, here

    https://www.sinodefenceforum.com/effectiveness-of-wheeled-atgms-carriers.t96/page-4#post-448908,

from which the picture in discussion came from.

In the pictures it clearly show the rounds were fired from the left side of the picture (i.e. the cameraman in the foreground) with all the targets on the right side. There's just no reason to change firing directions of the targets in the middle of an exercise. And the way the billowing smoke of the explosion were blowing in the same manner and direction indicates that the pictures were taken at about the same time of the day.

I think this is a more appropriate thread. Included photos are also slightly larger than the CJDBY versions.

General consensus at the moment is this is a railgun prototype and the containers seen on deck are the power supply units. Speculation is also rife that an LST was chosen to be the testbed because the usual test ship's electricity generation was insufficient to power the gun and it didn't have enough free deck space to host auxiliary generators.

This has to be an electromagnetic gun of some sort. Conventional guns would penetrate well below deck and it doesn't look as if this LST has enough draft for that.

It doesn't hurt to hold off with being sure about the rail-gun nature of it. If it is a rail gun, it means its quite close to a finished product. So we may see it within a few years on serial standard ships.
