I was thinking that either you parade something that has to do with WWII, or you parade your newest toys to show off you national defense capabilities. That is what Russia does: only historical ones or newest ones, nothing in between. As with DF-5, that is something "in between," so unless we are talking about DF-5Bs, I don't get the logic of parading a first generation ICBM.
Well there is a pattern in China that when it comes to important weapon systems they always tend to show the older generation of what they have so they could be hiding their actual strength and since the DF-41 is the latest ICBM China has they probably want to keep it away from public eyes for as long as possible.

Yes I agree with your logic, but what about parading the DF-31A, which entered service in 2006, during the 2009 parade? Also, the original DF-31 was shown in 1999, but it also did not enter service until mid. 2000s. And the type 98 prototype tanks during the 1999 parade, too.

Displaying a liquid-fuelled, silo-based obsolete relic and flaunt it as the backbone of China's nuclear strike capability just won't do China any favours, but rather makes it irrelevant, if not a total laughing stock, in world's opinion.

In any case, the DF-41 is pretty much already out of the closet, and it's inside the TEL, by all account makes it superior candidate than the DF-5 relic.

Yes, I do think China needs to parade something a bit more modern and capable than the DF-5 and since DF-41 is maybe still a bit to new to show I do agree that the DF-31A is the next best choice but then again we haven't gotten pictures of all the military equipment that is going to participate in the parade so who knows when Sep 3 comes around maybe there will be several DF-31As rolling across the parade grounds :D

I agree that the DF-41 is essentially better than the DF-5 in basically every category but it's probably the same reason why the J-20 is not publically shown in the sense that it's a very important project for the PLAAF and the DF-41 is basically the best ICBM in Chinese service so they don't want to show the best, but I definitely agree with you they should display something a bit more modern since DF-5s aren't going to impress anyone today so like what Josh Luo recommended maybe the DF-31A?

In that case just show the DF-31A right after the DF-5s, that way it would show progression. Besides, the DF-5 is in the same performance class as the old Soviet SS-18, so if anything it's developmental potential hasn't been anywhere near exhausted yet and not something to be disparaged about.

That would probably be the best way to handle this parade and who knows maybe it'll end up being like this on Sep 3.

But if they show the DF-5B, then it would be progression, especially if the DF-5Bs carry MIRVs or hypersonic glider warheads. At the same time, however, it is DF-5 series' liquid-fuel boosters that are outdated. If I were deterrence strategists in the PLA, I rather spend a bit more money to MIRV the solid fuel ICBMs than to keep upgrading the DF-5s, despite that the DF-5s have much higher carrying capacity.
