You can watch the full presentation. He outright states that ERNIE was released early due to pressure from customers wanting a ChatGTP model for their products and that they sat on ERNIE since 2019... for some reason.

As we speak, there's dozens of high level A.I scientist and researchers who are trying to pause A.I research in America because they think that the next gen LLMs like GTP-5 like going to be so good that they might be some kind of proto-AGI, that they could lose control of them, that they could do great harm to society. That's how different the level of industry is. China is trying to catch up with ChatGTP, but next gen A.I models in America are getting so good that people are starting to question if they're AGI, if they can reason or have some form of internal logic. They're willing to ask a nation wide 6 month pause, that's how serious their fears are.

And don't give me that whole "HUR DUH CHATBOT", as the capabilities of this LLM improves, people are starting to see that LLM can have some sort of internal logic within them, something that could be improved via scaling up, people are legit questioning if LLM can produce AGI, if it's just a matter of scaling. Deepmind and OpenA.I have stated, that yes, you scale up a LLM large enough, trillions of parameters, maybe tweak the training data a little, introduce some reinforcement learning, and you get AGI. Nobody knows if it will actually work or not, but given that this are the two best A.I companies in the world right now.... there's a decent chance that they're right.

You can cope all you want, this is all from top A.I institutions and researchers. There's a small chance that LLM will get us to AGI. Even if it's a 1% chance do you want to take that risk? Why all the cope? It is because China fucking ignored such a powerful model for 2 years, even when OpenA.I and Deepmind were screaming about it from the rooftops? Again, why is dozens of chinese A.I labs and companies running to develop their LLM ChatGTP clones months after ChatGTP came out and not say, back in 2020 when GTP-3 was released? That's my main issue here, how could they have ignored such a important development in the A.I sector, when they're working in the A.I sector.

Let me guess, once China actually gain ground with America in the LLM space, and state the same facts, "Hmmm, maybe LLM could get us to AGI after all with enough parameters" then you'll suddenly change your tune and go "LLM is actually the most important technology ever" Maybe if China hadn't ignored American A.I development for 2 years like you, they wouldn't be so behind.
This is not EUV tech, the algorithm, code, and trained nueral net can be wholesale copied as easily as a "dont copy that floppy"

Google couldnt unseat facebook not because it couldnt design a social network website, but because of network effects...

No one implements better at speed than China...

Just look at wechat qr cashless payments as one example, here in the USA you still got old greezers writing paper checks

For all that you've typed up, your conclusions are all completely wrong

If America was really winning they wouldnt need the RESTRICT and DATA Acts... actions speak louder than words. Dont just get swept up and washed away by headline titles

Oh, ok. So basically it's exactly like I said except I made China look further behind than it actually was. Your neighbor strapped a flashlight to his hat and took a stroll at night, and your kids throught it was cool so you remembered that you had such a thing you made a while back so you dusted it off and you're putting some new tape on it. Yeah sounds like it's not that important and the US is not that far ahead if it is at all, even in this niche small part of AI. Totally good reason for you to freak out.
Yup, talk about literally getting caught up in the wave of hype

Tencent's cloud-based database (TDSQL) set a new world record in TPC-C benchmark. During the 8 hours of benchmark run, the test system sustained 814 million transactions per minute.

7 out of the top 10 banks in China have been using TDSQL. Tencent has displaced imported DB products from more than 20 financial institutions.

Yeah sure, the same way they took a 6 month pause during the manhattan and apollo projects right? because its not like being the first on the moon or the first to weld atomic weapons wasnt serious enough...

Its much more likely they are taking this "pause" because they realize they hyped everyone up, jumped the taco, and need a cooling off period to regroup before it all comes crashing down the valley of disillusionment

China is working on a blueprint for a gigantic underwater telescope to observe neutrinos, which will contribute to solving a century-old scientific puzzle of the origin of cosmic rays. It is designed with a roughly 30-cubic-km volume and will be submerged to a depth of over 1 km..

Some neutrinos come from outside the solar system. These high-energy neutrinos may originate from black holes, supernovas, pulsars or some other event that scientists haven’t observed yet. It's these high-energy neutrinos that scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences are trying to find.

The new detector will be built with 55,000 sensors suspended 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) beneath the ocean's surface, much larger than Russian and American detectors at about 7 cubic miles (30 cubic km), project lead researcher, Chen Mingjun, told

. There the sun's rays can't travel that deep, which will help the sensors detect neutrinos and distinguish them from solar neutrinos.

One specific goal of the detector would be to figure out whether gamma rays and high-energy neutrinos might come from the same intergalactic sources. In 2021, the Chinese Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory detected gamma rays that researchers hypothesize originate in the same place as cosmic rays, or high-speed subatomic particles from outside the solar system. If the researchers detected neutrinos coming from the same source, "we can determine the origin of the cosmic rays," Chen said.

foreigner to head a scientific institute on the Chinese mainland.

The Pasteur Institute of Shanghai was established in 2004 as a scientific partnership between France and China, focused on infectious-disease research. Over the years, researchers at the institute have studied viruses from hepatitis C to Ebola, Zika, HIV and SARS-CoV-2, and contributed to the development of vaccines and treatments, including a candidate drug to treat hand, foot and mouth disease, and a norovirus vaccine. As of last August, the institute had 146 staff members, including 35 principal investigators, as well as 29 postdoctoral fellows. Roughly 9% of the staff and postdoctoral fellows had a non-Chinese background.
At the time, China was not a leader in many research fields, says Hughes. But it is now an established scientific powerhouse, so CAS might not see so much value in co-leading such an institution with a foreign organization, says Hughes.

The break in ties could also signal that China’s “era of internationalization” in research is over, she says, and that although foreign researchers are welcome at Chinese research institutions, they might not be able to co-lead them. It represents a significant loss for the Pasteur Institute in the region, she says.

However, Lan says the news is regrettable, but that the Chinese government encourages international scientific collaboration, which is still very active in the field of life sciences and necessary for infectious-disease research.
Experts say the Pasteur Institute’s decision to sever ties with CAS will have minimal impact on virology research in China, because that is now one of the country’s strengths.

suggests that Russia is increasing partnerships with China and India.

Nature analysed co-authorship patterns on papers in the Scopus database. The results suggest that, in 2022, an increased share of Russia’s internationally collaborative papers had co-authors from China and India, whereas the proportion co-written with US or German authors fell. Ukraine, meanwhile, has sharply reduced its scholarly ties with Russia, and seems to have increased research connections with Poland.

Many of the papers published in 2022 were submitted to journals well before Western institutions halted scientific partnerships with Russia in response to the full-scale invasion, which began on 24 February.

China is increasing its scientific co-authorship share with most countries except the United States, so its rising influence on Russia might not be particularly unusual, says Caroline Wagner, a science and policy researcher at the Ohio State University in Columbus. “The Russia–Ukraine conflict does not appear to have interrupted Russia and China’s cooperation,” she says.
