Re: Somali pirates and Chinese navy

Does it really matter what some media have to say with thier "opinions" if China send a ship to fight pirate and protect shipping of both it's own and international ships?
No, it doesn't, not even the sligtest, just do the right thing and let ppl say what ever they want, who cares?

If u really want to shut those biased media up, you can always leave your country without a military.

Some ppl just care too much, do too little.

Its called Information Warfare, and militaries spend billions of dollars on it and PR every year.

It is very important for popular support, public image, recruiting rate, international support and future budget. It can change your current allies into enemies of tommorow. You cannot be careless with such a serious matter, as long as the country isn't too PC and bends over to blackmail or bullying.

In regards to doing too little, hope i do not become personal but have you got much hunting experience? A good hunter and or Sniper needs paitience. You can be waiting and brooding for days on end to hunt a single prey, whilst doing nothing at all. one can do too much and step on their own foot in such instances.

That sounds a bit single-minded to me. China hasn't had peacekeeping deployments spun against it in various mainstream publications, so why would most people complain about joining in anti-piracy operations?

Look up Dafur. Look up Georgia. Sometimes the media will be paid and have political incentive to perform such acts of journalism, other times they just do it because it sells. Either way, its what the media wants to do and thats exactly what they have been doing.

If there is going to be a law enforcing task force under the UN or AU flag, China can send the Kunlunshan LPD, she looks and sounds a lot less menacing than your average destroyers and frigates, while the 76mm gun is more than sufficient in dealing with any pirate ships, she can carry a company of marines to serve as boarding parties, and helicopters and speed boats to transport them, her large medical facility also helps in hostage situation. She can be accompanied by a Qiandaohu replenishment ship, which can provide support for both the LPD and foreign ships in the task force.

Perhaps China could do something that's completely different. That is, bringing Somalia back from a failed state, which is why we have a growing pirate problem in the area as there isnt any other way for the population to make a living

That's a very good point, economic action here could be possibly more decisive than any military action.

First of all no nations should support any of the numerous splinter groups that are running around the country, as their particular proxy, but give whole hearted support to the UN, to manage it like the Congo was in the 60's while avoiding some of the mistakes.

bringing Somalia from a failed state will solve the root of the problem, but how to solve it is the big question.

LPD and replenishment ship is a good combo for these missions.
Although judging from recent exercise, a frigate,LPD and a replenishment ship will be a likely task force in PLAN were to send one.

If the PLAN does deploy ships, how much is this going to cost and how long are they expected to stay?

The UN peace keeping force in Cyprus has been there since 1964 with no end in sight. The UN was in Somalia twice (UNOSOM & UNOSOM II) and ended up pulling out in 1995.

A cheaper solution may be to take a side and train Somali to fight Somali piracy. Would the Puntland government and its military accept foreign aid, in exchange for wiping out the pirates from Eyl?

The purpose of sending PLAN ships to patrol the coast there would be to gain valuable operational experience, at $$$ cost. Realistically, having a couple warships cruising around isn't going to stop the pirates. I highly doubt the PLAN would conduct punitive strikes against town of Eyl.

I doubt if China will send any ships. Perhaps a solution would be to man up Chinese merchants transversing these troubled waters with PLA troops to deter the pirates.

..Or the PLAN could send ships and do what the Indian Navy did when it caught pirates in the act..Smoke check 'em!

In this Indian Navy handout picture received on November 24, 2008 an alleged pirate vessel burns after being hit during anti-piracy operations at sea in the Gulf of Aden on November 18, 2008.
