Re: DF-11 and DF-15 to Scud missiles

The Scuds, although having a greater payload, are not as accurate as the DF series tactical ballistic missiles. Also, the DF series are not made to carry nuclear warheads like the Scuds, I believe. So in the end, the Chinese probably decided to built something more satisfactory to their requirements, and national pride plays a part too. You have to remember missiles were first invented in China, so it stands little to wonder why China's missile developments are given high priority even in the early days of Mao.

Yes. They are basically difference in the type of propellant that powered them.

The reason I am posing the question is the confusion at why China would go into production of the DF-11 and DF-15 missiles if they can just reverse engineered the Scud missiles since the Scud would be cheaper than the DF series of SRBM and that the Scud and DF served similar mission suit.

Is it because the Scud had a longer preparation time before deployment and engagement, easier to intercept (I read somewhere that the DF-11 missile had a speed of Mach 6 in terminal phase thus making it almost impossible to intercept with current anti-missile systems in the world) and if the Scud is not really mobile (highly impossible), or is it just because of national pride.

Besides range and payload, there is also the question of the terminal speed of the payload. The missile can be designed to have a larger payload even if it means sacrifying some of the terminal speed of the warhead.

Scud is an out dated design, it uses liquid fuel, has limited terminal velocity, the war head does not detach from the booster, and it was not designed with terminal guidance and penetration aids in mind.

if you look at the velocity, accuracy and portability of the export P-12 and B-611 and then compare that to Iskander, you'd see that Chinese SRBM are among the best out there.

I agrea with tphuang our scud may have a big payload, but the chinese aim for actualy hitting thier targets prb destroction.

Cruise missile does really fly in the true aerodynamic sense of the
word and therefore can't be compared to a ballistic missile.

My understanding is that, ballistic missiles go to outer space and re-enter, that's why it need more fuel. But it has higher speed at final stage (somebody mentioned earlier the DF-11/15 has a speed up to Mach 6 at final stage), while cruise missile only flies with atmosphere (quite similar to UAV), but much lower speed.

My question is the tactics, effectiveness and technique of building and using the two things. Why bother making the big things while the smaller things can fly much longer. I also note that China currently has no cruise missile in operation.

it's much harder to intercept ballistic missile than cruise missiles. Due to the faster speed + bigger payload, bm also causes larger impact. As for China having no cruise missile, that's definitely not true.

they got air launched cruise missiles like the ones we saw on H-6K, they got sea launched cruise missiles like the ones we saw they put on 052C and the got land based cruise missiles looking like YJ-62 according to Janes.
