they looked like the last few soldiers defending the town, and my guess would be that they were cut off and surrounded. on the other hand, using tanks in an urban environment wouldn't be very smart in the first place.

I think you are referring to the mountain scene not the town scene right? Well I think the reason is that KMT did not expect the resistance there to be so great and just wanted to conserve their resources. Sending tanks into unknown defenses is rather risky.

I showed the movie to a Korean friend of mine, and he claimed that the consulting SFX company was the same as the one that did Taegukgi hwinairmyeo in 2004. It's possible that some of the hardware were recycled between the 2 films.
