My heart goes out to all the people in the affected cities. This is a real tragedy, and I hope to God that they rescue as many people as they can out of the rubble.

Fitting with China's status as the world's most populous country, natural disasters always seem to happen there on a huge scale. From the old Yellow River floods to the famines of the Mao years to this earthquake, no nation seems to experience the fury of nature on such a grand scale as China. The Chinese people are strong and they always pull through.

Living in California, we're just waiting for the next big earthquake.

Aside from the quake itself, the rocks fell from the mountains also caused great damages.

if what i remember is correct, the epicentre is at wenchuan, not beichuan.

and as far as i know the rescue team hasn't reached wenchuan county yet.

I was rather surprised that they even tried to airdrop paratroopers into the region considering it was almost night time, there was a storm, and the mountainous terrain. airdropping would be crazy in my opinion...

According to XINHUA, now about 800 military personals arrived in Wenchuan. There were three teams arrived by walking. One led by the commander of the Sichuan provincial military district Gen. Xia Guofu, one led by the vice commander Gen. Li Yazhou, another let by the commander of 13th army Gen. Li Yong.

You're right, Beichuan is actually some 50 miles away from the actual epicenter, which is located at Wenchuan county. I heard the first batch of PLA troops just arrived at Wenchuan, and the air force is considering drop paratroopers to the region(very dangerous under such condition indeed) within hours. I heard Premier Wen Jiabao said they have now mobilized more than 100,000 troops, if true I believe this is the biggest troop deployment for PLA in decades.

XINHUA just reported 15 paratroopers just successfully landed and reported to the headquarter. Others are probably still in the plane.

A PLA black hawk landed on the top of a hill for rescue mission.

Looking at the low clouds & mountains in the background, doesn't look much like ideal condition for air drop of either rescuers or materials does it ?
