This pic may be dated but is still great never the less...
The F-117 Nighthawk, the world's first attack aircraft to employ stealth technology, is retiring after 27 years of U.S. Air Force service. The aircraft made its first flight at the Tonopah Test Range, Nev., in June 1981, just 31 months after full-scale development was authorized. The Nighthawk program remained classified until November 1988, when a photo of the jet was first unveiled to the public. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Aaron D. Allmon II)

Thanks for sharing this Jeff. Great pics. I particularly like the shots of the CVs at work, but, then again, I've always loved aircraft carriers! :D

You are very welcome Tas. In the not too distant future, I am sure we will see the new Aussie LHD's in similar operational pictures!

I hope they build them so they can retrofit the ski-jump if necessary so they can revisit the F-35 decision (or some other VSTOL aircraft) later.

Actually, current plans still include the ski jump - see my last post in Aircraft Carriers II.

Saw that post. I am glad they will be there. That will allow cross deck work certainly from the US, and perhaps will one day allow for a RAN air wing component...at least more easily than if they were not there.

I love this artists concept pic:

While I like the idea of the four Typhoon auto-25mm guns, I am somewhat surprised and dismayed that there are no better anti-missile defenses for the vessel itself. A single or pair of RAM launchers would be very good if you ask me.

Hopefully, the RAN will fully utilize the Saab’s 9LV combat system and add the necessary phased array CEAFAR/CEAMOUNT radars; like they are doing with the ANZACs.

It would be nice to see a seperate thread on these vessels if the mods will allow it. They are not really carriers, and in the region...like the DOKDOs and the new Japanese DDH carriers, they represent a significant addition.

I agree with you re the lack of anti missile defences, although the Typhoon is probably sufficient for operations in the Pacific region. I suspect that the navy is anxious to keep costs as low as possible but I wouldn't be surprised to see an anti missile defence system fitted once the vessels come into service, particularly if they are ever deployed to a warzone.Incidently, the RAN embarks army manned RBS-70 SAMs on its current amphibious ships when they deploy and the same will most likely be done with the Canberras to supplement the 4 x 25mm Typhoon mounts and provide at least a minimal anti aircraft defence. The addition of RAM or ESSM would be nice to see.

I can also see value in a separate thread for the big air capable amphibious ships and escorts.

MOD Note >>> Gents please keep the discussion of large deck amphips in the CV thread.Whereas most nations refer to these type ships as aircraft carriers..Thank you.
