$2.8 Billion for two ships! Those are very expensive ships. Too expensive. However if the USN wants to go foward with this program they shall.

I wonder how many ships of this class will be built eventually. 8-12 is the likely number. My assumption each will be assigned to a CSG. (Carrier Strike Group)

I'm not surprised given they don't have a production run to reduce costs. If they have a class of 8-12 that cost per ship will come down.

In fact the final cost per ship, according to the article, is likely to be between $3.3 Billion minimum up to $5 Billion per ship!

Providing the design proves successful, bearing in mind concerns re the seaworthiness of the tumblehome hull design, I agree that one for each CSG seems to be likely.

As said, the lead ships will come in at around $3,3 to $3,5B per ship. Building seven, or perhaps twelve in a later batch might bring the cost down somewhat. But they will still be very expensive.
As the article sais, those ships will be needed for operations in the littorals, like fire support. So, I think they'll not neccesarily be assigned to CSGs. But perhaps also Phibrons or SAGs where necessary.

Now with those ships very likely being built soon, we can perhaps already speculate about a CG(X) derivative.
15.000t with nuclear propulsion and DEWs? That would again need an enormous amount of resources etc. We shall see :)

Galarhn posted something interesting recently on his blog. He was saying that DDG-1000 can almost be used as something that's really new and experiment and can test out a lot of technologies to be used in future projects. Especially the new naval gun being developed for it, that's a pretty nice of gadget, isn't it?

I don't think so, I am thinking this is more of a replacement for the old Sprucane and Kidd DD's that were in service. The OHP's are being replaced by LCS, and the Burke's are good for another 20 years, and they are still producing more. The Tico's are due for replacement in 5-10 years, but the Burke's offer very similar capabilities.

A couple of years ago the USN had a plan to re-fit some Ticos. Sort of a SLEP for cruisers. I do not know if the USN still plans to go ahead with these plans. Presently I do not know of any Ticos under going this "SLEP". Does any one else??

In 2006, cruisers will begin the process of being upgraded through the Cruiser Modernization program. Cruiser Modernization is a cost effective means to sustain or increase force structure and deploy new vital capabilities sooner. All cruisers in the fleet with the exception of CGs 47-51, will eventually go through modernization. Cruiser Modernization will improve warfighting capability by providing systems upgrades including Cooperative Engagement Capability and the AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 with Multi-Function Towed Array. Cruiser Modernization also provides a viable platform for future Ballistic Missile Defense missions. A comprehensive service life extension work package, which includes the All-Electric Modification, SMARTSHIP upgrades, hull, mechanical, and electrical system upgrades, and a Type Commanders maintenance work-package, is included in modernization

I think that cruiser modernization program has just started:

BAE Systems has been awarded a $31 million contract by the Naval Sea Systems Command for the maintenance, repair and modernization of the guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG-52).

This award augments the cruiser modernization work already underway at the company's Virginia shipyard. [...]

Work is scheduled to take place in San Diego from Feb. 13, 2008 through February 2009. The project, which includes dry-docking and pier-side work, [...]

Activities include: all-electric modification to replace steam-operated equipment; stainless steel sanitary space upgrades; corrosion control enhancements; tank, underwater hull and freeboard preservation; and extensive weapons, sensor and communication system upgrades. ...

CG-52 and all later Ticos are to be modernized under the CMP. These enhancements in capabilities should allow them to stay in active service longer, untill a replacement is in sight.
