Sub-assembly of Thunder aircraft begins at Kamra

By Yaqoob Malik

ATTOCK, Jan 22: Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed has said that the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) is looking forward to achieving, within one year, the capacity of producing annually 15 JF-17 aircraft.

He was addressing the launching ceremony of JF-17 Thunder sub-assembly at the PAC, Kamra, on Tuesday. The ceremony marked yet another milestone in defence cooperation between Pakistan and China.

“On this momentous occasion, the PAF congratulates the countrymen on this singular success and reassures that the ‘Fazaia’ would always uphold the sacred trust of being a symbol of pride for the nation,” he said.

The air chief said that in two to three years the production capacity would be enhanced to 20-25 aircraft.

“I am also looking forward to setting up the first JF-17 operational conversion unit by the end of this year,” he said.

“I would like to remind everyone, especially, the personnel of PAC Kamra of the challenge and promise of success that lie ahead, as you embark upon the coveted goal of manufacturing,” he said.

“It is for you to seize the opportunity and make your nation proud,” he said.

The JF-17 Thunder project envisages co-production of the aircraft both in China and Pakistan. The objective of setting up JF-17 production facilities at the PAC is not only to enhance the PAF’s operational capability at affordable price but also to create employment opportunities for about 5,000 people.

The production of sub-assemblies would, subsequently, be expanded to encompass the parts manufacturing, final assembly and flight testing. Fighter aircraft manufacturing, he said, which was once a closely guarded realm of developed countries, “is now well within our reach.”

The success today stands on the foundations of the perseverance of our pilots, engineers and technicians and their Chinese counterparts.”

JF-17 Thunder aircraft is an advanced, multi-purpose, light combat aircraft, jointly developed by China and Pakistan.

It is a key collaboration strategic project between the two countries. The project has already made some big strides, achieving major milestones like the first flight of prototype aircraft, PT-01 in August, 2003, PT-03 in April, 2004, and PT-4, with fully integrated configuration, on May 10, 2006, taking the programme to a new height.

Later, PT-06 made its maiden flight in September, 2006, paving the way for smooth flight testing process.

In order to speed up the development progress and facilitate maturity of the aircraft, two JF-17 aircraft of the small batch production were received in Pakistan at a ceremony presided over by the president on March 21, last year.

Subsequently, these aircraft made their debut by participating in the National Day fly past on March 23.

Azerbaijan plans to buy JF-17 aircrafts from Pakistan, Pakistani Defense Ministry said, and APA reports

The Joint Fighter-17 (JF-17) Thunder also known as the Fighter China-1 (FC-1) Fierce Dragon in China, is a single-seat multirole fighter aircraft developed by China and Pakistan. The JF-17 Thunder aircraft had its first public appearance in Islamabad, on March 23, 2007 during a fly-past performance in the Pakistan Day Joint Services Parade in Islamabad.
Pakistan Air Force Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed stated that they would soon manufacture 500-600 aircrafts within 20 years 150-300 aircrafts will be manufactured for themselves and the rests will be sold to other countries.
The 4th prototype of the JF-17 Thunder combat jet is configured as a multi-role fighter-bomber and is capable of carrying multiple air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons and the current engine in the JF-17, the Russian RD-93, is not completely smoke-free. Its ferry range is 3,000 km. It costs $ 15 million.
I think previously, we read the number they are interested in is 24.

JF-17 Enters Serial Production in Pakistan

The JF-17 reportedly entered production in Pakistan this past week:

The article suggests that Pakistan will take deliver of 10 production fighters in 2008, 15 in 2009, with production continuing to ramp up to 25 fighters per year by 2011. This is in addition to the 8 pre-production flight test articles that Pakistan already has.

Initial aircraft will all be equipped with China's KLJ-10 radar. This article also confirms that China will be supplying SD-10 (PL-12) missiles for the aircraft.

I don't know if this anything to do with it but it showed up recently on the internet. It doesn't look like a twin seater though. It's nice fanboy art though if that's all it is.

I never said it was a photograph. In the context of my original post which was a reply to news to future development of an attack version of the FC-1/JF-17, this possible concept render or fanboy art appeared around the same time.

Re: New JF-17/FC-1 Fighter Aircraft thread

I believe it was this one.

Thank you very much . Interesting JF17 with 9 hard points and CFT.Worth hoping for!!!. Idont know whether it is feasable or even advisable for thunder in its role in PAF to have CFTs.Certainly, there has been clear indications from ACM about ongoing work to increase hardpoints to 9.Can any of the illustrious members shed some light about its possible role in PLAAF. I remember TPHuang's post suggesting a possible interest in a ground attack version. Any insight into how JF17 needs to change/evolve to assume that role?
thanks in advance
