What is a 'round down'?

The 'Round Down/Rounddown' is literally the after deck edge of the carrier's flight deck, aerodynamically shaped to reduce turbulence encountered by approaching CTOL aircraft as they come in to land. STOVL carriers don't have them as Harriers normally approach alongside the ship in hover mode and match speed with the deck, then 'translate' sideways over the ship and touch down vertically. CVF as designed had a CTOL style round down fitted aft so that if and when the ships are brought up to CTOL standard it will just be a matter of installing the arrestor wires and catapults (which the ships are already designed to accomodate, ie 'fitted for but not with') then painting the angled deck onto the ships. Omitting this feature from the ships now does not preclude re installing at a later date, and as I said earlier, is most likely a cosmetic measure intended to appease the bean counters without actually sacrificing any capability.

Thanks Obi Wan for that great answer!

Kickars..Here is a pic for you to see the round down. See those sailors on the aft end of the flight deck all lined up. ? Now just below them is an area pained white..like a big stripe. That is the round down.

Some PIX of the Russian CV, ADM"K", being escorted by a Norweigan ship.I have no idea the date on these PIX. But my assumption is that they are recent. Look at the P-3! What country? any guesses? And the ADM"K" flight deck..Jeez not much happening there! Totally devoid of any action!.

QUOTE]

The pictures are from 30.jan i think (published in Norwegian newspaper 01.feb) and is taken in the Barents-sea just outside the coast of Norway. The frigate is the Roald Amundsen (one of Norway 5 new Fritjof Nansen aegis frigates), the PC3 is also Norwegian. No flight operatins that day. They made quite a stir the first days of the deployment, when doing flight-ops in the middle of Norwegian oil-platforms (!) and halted all helo-transport form land and the platforms.. a written complain was sent too Russia about the incident...
Norwegian F-16 identified and scrambled russian long distance strategic planes outside the coast 47 times last year..88 planes identified

Popeye, that is the second in class (

) of the five new AEGIS frigates that Norway has. Impressive vessels. That is probably also a Norwegian P-3.

My understanding is that the Kuznetsov and its strike group came in there and began conducting flight operations (during the same operations as I posted in my thread about the Kuznetsov strike group with all of the pics of the Kuznetsov, so at the end of January of this year) in the relative near proximity of Norwegian oil platforms. The Norwegians (needlesss to say) did not like it and took actions of their own which included scrambling some of their F-16s and sending naval vessels, including their AEGIS vessel out there to keep an eye on things.

Anyhow...very much cold-war'ish type behavior on the part of the Russians in that regard.

I tend to agree with you. The Kuznertsov, probably has no more than 16-18 fixed wing aircraft and 4-6 helos. Clearly, the entire group can be housed in the hangar spaces.
