Guys,

This report is obviously false.. how would russia even believe that the Iranians could even afford that many.. 250+Tankers ?

I don't believe in coincidence... when this report came out, US suddenly announced that Pro-US allies in ME would get 20 Billions $$ in arms sales, Then Israel would get F-22/F-35. By now, If I gotten to know how things are run... It all for Israel.

Armed ME to the teeth so that Israel can have a reason to the real booty(F-22/F-35), and 30 billion aid.

I'm sorry, is it official that Israel would get the F-22?

If so, I have a question. This may sound messed up, but I was just wondering that Israel would probably reverse engineer the F-22 (correct me if I'm wrong).

If so, would Israel sell the technology to China?

I remember reading about how Israel used to sell China a lot of technology back in the late 90s and even almost sold the Phalcon radar system.

I'm just curious and I didn't know if it belonged in this thread or the actual Chinese aviation thread.

How do you know Israel will reverse engineer F-22 if they get to buy it?
I think this is one of the reasons why US hasn't allowed F22 to be sold, even to alliies...yet. Someone might try to reverse engineer it then sell components of the technology to a 3rd country.

The Iranians are denying the report:

Iran: Russia Fighter Jet Rumor Untrue
August 01, 2007 1714 GMT
Iranian Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Mostafa Mohammad Najjar on Aug. 1 dismissed reports that Iran had purchased 250 fighter jets from Russia. He said the rumor is part of a psychological operation by Israeli media to overshadow U.S. arms deals with Israel. Najjar said U.S. military aid to countries in the region is not concerning to Iran, and that the boost to Muslim countries' arms power serves the interests of the world of Islam.

Najjar is alluding to a very delicate problem:
The near and mid term prospect of political stability in hitherto pro US countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
President Mubarak of Egypt and King Abdallah of Saudi Arabia are octogenerians and crownprince Sultan is only a few years younger. Mubarak currently tries to install his son Gamal as ´crown prince´but has run into resistance from several powerful goups within the regime so far.

Washington will have to take certain steps to prevent their puppets in Cairo and Riyadh from falling and consequently a scenario like '78/'79 in Iran with the emergence of a violently anti american regime is indeed unlikely but nevertheless the next strong man in Cairo will be probably much less docile than the good old abettor Mubarak.

After all Najjar has some point that the US weapons will make Islam stronger since he knows that just people the US is presuming in their pocket are playing double cross with them furthering their own agenda (i.e. staying in power). :D

And just to show how false and inaccurate Dubka is, take a look at this new clip:

Terror threat Web site called unreliable By ARON HELLER, Associated Press Writer
Sun Aug 12, 11:38 AM ET

JERUSALEM - The reported threat of a dirty bomb attack in New York City that led to heightened security this weekend came from a Jerusalem-based Web site that claims more than a million daily readers, but is criticized by intelligence experts as unreliable.

Giora Shamis and his wife, Diane Shalem, launched DEBKAfile (Debka.com) in 2000 to focus on security, terrorist activities and military affairs in the Middle East. Shamis claims he and his wife predicted the al-Qaida attack on the World Trade Center.

Shamis says Debka, which is financed by subscriptions and ad revenue, has a daily readership of 1.3 million. But its reports, published in English and Hebrew, rely on anonymous sourcing and often prove untrue.

Last week, the site reported intercepting al-Qaida messages discussing possible radioactive attacks against American cities, identifying New York, Los Angeles and Miami as potential targets.

"We have about four or five people that are sitting around the clock, 24-hours-a-day, tracking the different al-Qaida publications," Shamis said. "For us, this kind of story is routine."

But the reaction was not.

On Friday, the New York Police Department increased its radiological monitoring and established checkpoints to examine vehicles at various locations around Manhattan. NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne said the measures were in response to the Debka report. By Saturday, the department had eased its alert.

"I don't take Debka seriously as a reliable source ... but there are people who take it seriously and that's what makes it dangerous," said Boaz Ganor, an Israeli anti-terror expert.

Iran is in serious need of upgrades and has not underataken any significant arms purchase for its airforce in quite some time. The Mig-29/31 is a decent option but I think they would have been better off buying the new generations of Chinese fighters available on the market possible by using the good influence of Pakistan to help procure them. I think the push for the Russian aircraft is more due to lack of options rather than a genuine desire to actually want them. But in all fairness, Mig-29's/31 are very capable aircrafts and with Mikoyan Gurovich eager to sell them, you can be sure that price tag would also be enticing. The Sukhois are also a big hit, with many buyers now preparing to order their 2nd if not 3rd batch of the aircraft clearly indicating the favourable opinion established on these aircraft. The Iranian air force has certainly undergone considerable
changes since the 70's having changed from an entirely American platform, transitioning to Chinese equipment, and now to Soviet. I wonder how theve managed to keep up and maintain such a diverse range of aircrafts!

Furthermore Iran should replace its older aircrafts (F-5's, Phantoms, J-7 and others) with Pakistan's new F-17's which that country would be more than happy to sell to a neighboorly country (which has helped Pakistan in many times of need--i.e. previous wars) and encourage trade between the two neigboors as well help Pakistan kick start its own burgeoning indigenous arms industry.

it is better to put all your eggs in a basket that will try to some extent protect you from sanctions just like russia did for india from 1960-2000.there might be some problems but russia is not one to leave you high and dry.

Not sure about taking this report too seriously if it originated from an Israeli website! Also raises the question of Irans indigenous aircraft development plans such as the Saeqeh, developed by Iranian Aircraft Indusries & Aerounautical Research Centre, this is alleged to fly at 1.7 mach & have a cockpit & avionics comparable to Rafale, MIG29 & Typhoon!
Development costs were said to be about $400million plus, seems a lot of money to spend,if your planning to buy elsewhere anyway!
