Small arms deal is said to be assured one. It going to take place.

Tanks at IDEAS impressed the Azerbaijanis. There may be high level discussions but deal might go a little slow.

As for JF-17, although Azerbaijan press it self has reported that country "is going to buy it", lets wait & see.

It will be a massive breakthru and if secure will change Albania(long time ally of PRC) position of buying western stuff around.... Other small europe countries may turn to JF-17 too! But one thing for sure,a Chinese avionics on it is quite impossible!

Aliev jr. seems not to be so deep in the pocket of Uncle Sam like the first impression indicates.:D

Azerbaizhan has a lot of oil and China needs the stuff like oxygen for her booming economy and perhaps Beijing is willing to strike a fine mutually beneficial ´oil for weapons´ deal.

There was also some speculation around that Iran was interested in JF-17 but this is perhaps a no go currently (and in the near future) and Tehran probably wants to invest every Rial into ´homegrown´strategic weapons more capable in playing the role of a strategic equalizer against a superior adversary.:D

Yes.. Iran likes to go domestic but there is a limit to its capabilities.

Iran like to have everything done by themselves is due to the bad experience with the western power and US. While having a deal with PRC is different. Less restrict and politics involvement (I wouldn't say is complete but compare to west is much easier).PLus more reliable.

Iran have purchase a huge range of Chinese missiles and claim domestic.. I don't see why aircraft will not go that way. But of course,Iran need to order huge bulk to have the self made possible option available!

I'm not sure if China wants to sell Iran military equipment. If China doesn't give a damn about US opinion, it should still give a damn about the opinion of the other Arab countries, who also supply China with oil and not very friendly with Iran.

I dont see much prospects of Iran buying JF-17. According to some reports Iran had already placed orders for Su-30 & it is currently in production. I think Iranians named it something like Su-30MKIP or Su-30MKP ... "P" is for Persia.

Secondly Iranians have been bragging about how China robbed them with F-7 deal. Gave them a worthless machines .. etc.

I don't think FC-1 represent any danger to block-60 /F-15/mirage2K equipped airforces of arab states in neighbourhood. More damaging item would be AShM which have already been delivered are being produced by Iranians.

But realisticaly speaking i dont see any chance Iran would procure FC-1. They'd rather(and they should) develop the design that they bought from Russian design bureau (Mukhmadov??). It looks promosing.

Can you please tell us more on how exactly did China cheat Iran regarding
J-7 deal? A link perhaps. :)

Re: New JF-17/FC-1 thread

@kca90: AFAIK Iran ordered around 50 J7-I equipped with chinese avionics in '84 during the war with Iraq ('80-'88). The planes were delivered in '86-'87 and the Iranians were definitely not satisfied with their capabilities. Problems with inadequate avionics, weapons and several accidents prevented any combat use of the aircraft against Iraq. (some sources maintain that the aircraft were eventually scrapped and some remaining units sold to Sudan)

Interestingly the Iranians bought a new batch (24 units) of F7-N in the mid 90's (perhaps the deal was essentially political?). Further information is hard to acquire; perhaps some of our experts (Deino?) know some more details.

The Iranians are currently developing, producing and introducing several fighter aircraft:
1. Saeqeh, a modified F-5E with a new canted tail.
2. Azarakhsh, probably the Saeqeh prototypes (or a rival project??), had a russian N-019ME radar.
3. Shafaq a small trainer and ground attack aircraft , prototype will probably fly in '08.

Perhaps Tehran is interested in chinese engines for their domestic produced aircraft? What engines do they currently use and are they able to copy the GE J-85 turbojets for the serial production of the Saeqeh ?

no, Iran has not placed any orders for su-30s. The most likely prospect is Mig-29. Even so, the American pressure on Russia will probably prevent this sale. For the same reason, China will not sell any JF-17s to Iran either.

Iran has significant leverage on PRC most oil of China is imported from Iran. Plus Russia is not as weak as it use to be. I seriously doubt US can block any sales of Russia weapons to Iran if Iran wish to buy. Tor-1 is a good example!
