I wonder if it is spreading faster among people in close family or group is because of communal sharing of entree plates with infected person w/o symptoms. May be common sense to some of us but any idea if the govt or media are telling people to stop "communal" sharing?

I'm not a virologist or an epidemiologist but I am a medical doctor and I've had the same level of education in medical school about population health and infectious diseases as my other colleagues.
But the discussion at hand is not really that relevant to qualifications.

I don't claim to be an expert but I have a vested interest in seeking good health outcomes and accurate and non-sensationalist reporting of information.
The last thing we need is sky-is-falling commentary from experts who should know better, when the situation is still so early.

If we have any resident subject matter experts in the field on SDF, I think we would all welcome some input, but IMO it is most important at this stage to emphasize that the situation is an evolving one, and avoid "HOLY MOTHER OF GOD" type commentary.

@vesicles is a doctor or biomedical engineer if I am not mistaken.

I am not trying to spread or engage in unsubstantiated rumours, but are there any non Chinese origin or non asian people that has been found infected by the virus? Or this virus infects only people of Chinese origin so far?

I don't think there's been any breakdown of ethnicity I'm aware of yet.

However, considering where this virus began, perhaps it is wise to first ask whether it would be strange or expected for the vast majority of the cases so far to reflect the ethnic demographics of where it began... If it is expected, then there is no reason to engage in extra speculation at this stage.

He's more than that.:D

I’m a PhD, so not that kind of doctor :p:D

My focus is cancer biology, so has little experience with infectious diseases. My group uses viruses, more specifically HIV viruses, to get the genes of our interests into human cells. So our goals are typically the opposite of the virologists. We want our viruses to get in, not to stop them...

but it is something else entirely to start off a tweet with "HOLY MOTHER OF GOD" based on initial papers for a new virus where we still don't know much about.
And "thermonuclear pandemic", don't forget that.

They should know how their tweets and commentary would be reported, and they should know that the situation is evolving, and they should know that people are concerned, worried and that generating panic is never useful for anyone.
It's useful for people whose life's mission is bashing China and overthrowing its government. Everything is an opportunity to them.

The announcement by Ma Xiaowei that the virus can spread before symptoms appear (if they ever do) is concerning, however. How troubling a development do you consider this? Given that the virus's genome has already been sequenced, how quickly can a vaccine be put together?

Considering the virus jumped from a wild animal to a human, it is highly highly unlikely that the virus has any kind of ethnicity specificity. The virus doesn’t even care if its host is human or not... In fact, I personally have not heard any human-infecting virus has any kind of specificity toward a single ethnic group.

To me it's not surprising that those with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and kidney disease are at the highest risk of death.

The SARS-CoV has spike ligands and enters cells via ACE2 receptor on cells in the vasculature, heart, and kidneys.

ACE2 is responsible for regulating blood pressure and renal function and is a prime target for the treatment of hypertension.

ACE2 loss of function is also associated with lung inflammation and injury, hence the pneumonia symptoms.

(my speculations)

An Indian girl was infected just fyi

And interestingly Hong Kong was ready for this shit D:.
