Aircraft Carriers III

It did get covered by the local news at least. What matters is the naysayers have been proved wrong, they predicted:
a. The ships would never be built,
b. They would be cancelled whilst under construction,
c. They would never be commissioned,
d. One would be sold/mothballed, scrapped upon completion,

If you were an advocate of any of the above over the years, Go dip your head in something unpleasant and throw away your crystal balls as they ain't workin' buddy!

Both completed, both commissioned, both with a long and happy RN career ahead of them!79506308_10162626180190627_8927493217302085632_o.jpg 74364240_10156582456446481_9069505409001193472_o.jpg 78573103_467103960885717_635983973914247168_o.jpg 79950002_10156583759956481_6271548448625917952_n.jpg

Russian lone aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov has had a major fire;

The incident took place this morning, while the big ship was dockside at the 35th Ship Repair Plant in Murmansk.

reports, “the cause of the fire was that the spark fell into the hold during welding, and the remains of fuel oil caught fire there.” The fire then spread to an area of 120 square meters. As of nine hours ago, the fire had reportedly spread to 600 meters, with the ship’s diesel fuel on fire.

The fire had largely been put out by mid-afternoon local time, with “open flames” doused. The extent of damage to the ship is unknown. The Russian Northern Fleet stated there were no weapons or ammunition onboard the carrier at the time of the incident.

that 12 people were injured, “mostly poisoned by combustion products.” Six of the injured are in intensive care, with “just one in satisfactory condition.” Several of the injured are reportedly firefighters that responded to the fire. RIA Novosti reports the body of a service member was found, and two other persons are reported missing.

It’s not clear how badly today’s fire hurt the big ship. The fire is out, but it did burn for hours, Furthermore reports suggest the fire took place near the ship’s propulsion systems. The ship's upgrade was supposed to involve replacing four of the eight turbo-pressurized boilers and refurbishing the remainder. If those were damaged or destroyed the ship’s in-service date could be pushed back even further.

If the damage is bad enough, the ship may never sail again.

I was naysaying COD by the Osprey so now I should Behold The First Image Of A Navy CMV-22 Osprey That Will Replace The C-2 Greyhound

LOL

Jura.the US Navy is really pushing this aircraft to the point of exaggerating... In my opinion....like this from your link;

Things must have changed. I never ever once in the seven deployments I made ever saw an extra aircraft engine transported in a COD. Never. Not once.

well it was TE saying stuff

to which I reacted Jan 9, 2018

personally I don't believe a single word coming out of the USN
It was TE saying stuff that the USN and USMC were talking about. Farther more @bd popeye, please read this

In particular I quote
The Navy needs the C-2 to actually fight a war. We had two critical missions—supply engines for the carrier’s air wing as replacements and carry nukes back to the boat when they wanted to have nukes on them.

During war fighting, aircraft eat engines with foreign object debris (FOD) being the biggest problem. Apparently flying through the debris cloud caused by your attack on a ground target, or the randomly disintegrating aircraft you're fighting against, doesn’t do much good for a jet engine. We would be tasked to deliver two to four engines a day during combat to keep the air wing operational.
the guy being interview in this case was a COD driver.
The Ability to ship an engine seems to have been a requirement for the C2 when it took over form the C1 Trader. And a demand for the CMV22 now as it takes the job from the C2 Greyhound. The author above views the mission need as a priority as well as aviation parts above personal, mail and personal packages. However has you state it seems a rare actual demand. Perhaps more of a war time reserve. The options offered for replacing the greyhound including CMV22, and Lockheed Martin’s S3 rebuild both stated a ability to haul F135 engines. Lockhart apparently producing this concept image. BBA2AD0A-1F47-46F0-A2EF-13A680C529CA.jpeg

Boeing and the Marines went so far as to demonstrate hauling of a F135 power module.

Although the main method of engine transport will likely remain ship to ship with vert rep. It seems that the USN would like to retain at least the theoretical ability to fly in engines in a pinch. Or perhaps fly them out. The method used to haul in the MV22 lacks the specialized engine container normally used for hauling the F135. This was a sacrifice made to enable it to fit in the 60 inch box of the cargo hold.
V22 is notorious for it’s small size requiring special internally transportable vehicles to be small enough to fit. Your average modern compact car being to wide and tall.
As such the engine is more exposed to the air and environment then it would normally be in shipping. This may mean it’s more to shipping out damaged engines for more extensive repair than could be done aboard ship. In either way the Navy has placed an emphasis on the need to be able to ship F135 engines. the mission aim of the COD was meant more for spare parts, LOX, and replacement personal than the UPS of the sea.

@Jura I am well aware of your views regarding the USN programs. You have taken a jaded view almost as jaded as some of our more vehement American bashing members. Any new program of the USN falling into the realm of your version of “Game changers” a phrase you view in much the same way as Battleship navy people once viewed the Aircraft carrier.

Well now TNEE. I did retire from the USN in 1991. Things must have changed. I still never saw a COD bring an engine on board. I posted some photos some time ago on how engines are stored on a USN Carrier.

Back in the day COD were loved because they brought aboard the US mail. No EMAIL back then. Just snail mail. Tomorrow I'm going to search for photos of a C-2 Greyhound delivering a jet engine.

Rumours that Vladimir Putin took out a huge insurance policy just last week are unconfirmed. As are rumours that the stockpile of old used tyres she uses as fuel for her boilers caught fire are also unconfirmed.

The ship was in need of a major overhaul, which had been scheduled but was cut back to only a partial refit for cost reasons, which would have left her in an unsatisfactory condition during her twilight years. This could be the perfect excuse for the Russian Navy to get rid of a money pit, either ending their dreams of operating carriers or alternatively spurring them on to investing in new ships. My gut feeling is the former, not the latter. We shall see.

Follow up to the above news item;

MOSCOW (AP) — A crew member who went missing during a fire on Russia's only aircraft carrier was found dead Friday, raising the death toll from the blaze to two, the nation's military officials said Friday.

The fire on the Admiral Kuznetsov broke out during welding work at a shipyard in the Arctic port of Murmansk on Thursday and spread quickly through the carrier's internal compartments. The ship's crew and emergency teams spent more than 20 hours battling the blaze.

The military reported two crew members dead, and authorities in Murmansk said 11 other people were injured.

The Investigative Committee, Russia's top state investigative agency, opened a probe into a possible violation of safety rules.
