Well it’s been 7 years and with only a handful of aircraft you can’t train that many pilots

You can’t train pilots if you don’t have enough aircraft

China’s shipbuilding seems to outstrip it’s aviation supply

I don't see pilots being a big issue.

It would make more sense for the Chinese Navy to skip manned aircraft as much as possible, and go straight to unmanned aircraft.

As much as *possible* being the crucial term. There's still a fair number of scenarios where manned aircraft are required, and crucially there is also the issues of politics. In terms of posturing and symbolism it is very important for China to have a viable and powerful manned carrier aviation ability in order to deter adversaries and reassures allies (as well as win new allies).

Militarily, the image of power often matters far more than the practical uses of it. The Cold War was the ultimate example of it, but it's a geostrategic reality as old as the nation-state itself. Does America really *need* ten nuclear supercarriers? Or thousands of nuclear warheads? Obviously not, but image matters to the military-political mind, every bit as much as real world utility, and sometimes more (the Kuznetsov and Kirov for the Russians, and the Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales for the British are both evidence of the latter).

This is one of those things this carrier is for, producing a new generation of naval carrier pilots. Headed to work for 002 perhaps?

China Navy a new batch of carrier-borne fighter pilots passed the assessment.

The second picture is a bonus, a good view of the ESM and ECM equipment. The first two ledges have the Type 726-2 and 726-1 ESM units respectively top to bottom. The fourth ledge has the Type 726-3 ECM equipment. But the unit on the third ledge, may not have anything to do with ESM or ECM. This is likely to be a four faced phase array, with the other two faces on the other side of the island, not radar but for high speed data networking. This is one of the changes the Liaoning had during her last refit early in 2019.

Another change is the unit on the right side of the picture. The previous one is cylindrical, and after the refit it is shaped like a capsule. This is likely to be a TDOA ESM unit like the DWL002 and is often seen with destroyers.

I use these two features to visually judge if the picture of Liaoning is pre or post March 2019 refit.
