Strange how you think a PAP intervention to end violent riots would cause an international outcry, but depriving 7 million people of drinking water would not.

Comparing GDP numbers is meaningless. It wouldn't matter if HK was still a tiny fishing village, Beijing still has the duty to protect its citizens.
You are right, Beijing has a duty to protect HK, as HK is and always will be a part of China but if there are no other option that will not destroy and harm to the rest of the 1.4 billion citizens. Let it be then this minority of fanatical demonstrators self destruct for the good of the country. Look HK is lost, someone in Beijing had dropped the ball.

If Hong Kong seceded, China would have no responsibility what so ever for the island. Let the Hong Kongers beg for water.

Besides, a total water cut off wouldn't be necessary. Beijing could reduce Hong Kong's ration of fresh water down to where everybody on the island could still live but not take showers. Some Hong Kongers like to think mainlanders are dirty and smelly, but after a few weeks of not showering, Hong Kongers would be really dirty and smelly.

Secessionists hope to improve Hong Kong's situation, however unlikely that hope is. I am saying that Beijing has enormous scope to make life in independent Hong Kong much, much worse -- just as the Ukraine is now far worse than before its 2014 revolution, in spite of many promises by rebels.

After secession, if it happened, Hong Kongers would no longer be citizens of China. So why should Beijing care for them?

Because Beijing would never allow HK to secede in the first place?

I agree that Hong Kong would never secede.

I was assuming for the sake of discussion that HK did secede. If that happened, Beijing would have absolutely no responsibility for the island. Turning Hong Kong into a dirty island of stinking people would be the least of Beijing's options if the island separated from the mainland. Hopefully, the people of HK can see that far ahead and reject any secessionist movement.

So there is no need to talk about things that cannot happen for the sake of this forum being relevant to reality. Reading what you wrote, I also thought you were talking about it like a real possibility.

Actually, there's a need to warn the haughty Hong Kongers that they face a very stinky future if they upset Beijing much more.

Yeah, they'll be dead and under a tank long before Beijing decides to ruin the city with water deprivation throwing millions of patriots who live in Hong Kong under the bus with them.
