My guess is that the gun was left out of the first batches to save some weight due to the AL-31s being underpowered, relatively speaking, but that provisions for a gun are there and will be installed when the WS-15s are installed.

Dazzler to blind incoming missiles? That'll require a fair bit of power from the engines and more room than a gun port for the gymbal and controls.

Ejection seat sled test?

EDIT: The girder structure round the fuselage nose looks a bit elaborate for a typical sled. Probably related to the ejection system nonetheless, perhaps verification of canopy jettison trajectory?

Note the smoke near the portside of the aircraft. This is a photo of the J-20 literally shooting down theories that it carries no gun (pun very much intended).
But then, if the smoke is indeed from a prototype gun test, wouldn't that mean one would be able to discern the changes/modifications in the airframe in that particular area? That also puts into question the various (supposedly) locations of gun related port by @Inst.
Wish we had a better photo from Henry K.

The gun cannon on the J-20 was discussed before. Some engineer said the J-20 has a compartment designed for a cannon. If and when they believe the J-20 needs one, they will install them.

Yes, it might very well be, but they're hard to tell apart with only the nose of the airframe visible. *Especially* so with the censored part chosen this carefully - it's precisely the area where a number of key differences (MAWS window/fairing, EOTS turret, pitot position dielectric covers) would aid identification
