@PeoplesPoster, only GEO sat can track in real time but with useless resolution as of today. MEO (like Keyhole at 250km) and below can track in near real time if there are enough number (a constellation) to increase the revisit frequency. So far no country has deployed such system yet, but China is known to be deploying such system with a time gap small enough to be regarded as real time. This system has been discussed in this forum.

@Pika, maybe not constantly, there is no such capability by anybody yet. Live tracking of some important target for 20 minutes when they ALREADY know where the target is WITHIN a boxy area? I think US is already doing that for decades by Keyhole.

@Peter2018, one does not need to physically shoot the spy sat. Just use laser to dazzle the optical sensor or focused radar beam to jam the sat would do the job. US has complained about China laser dazzling their sat some years ago.

Yes and yes.

But shooting down another country’s satellite would be seen as a hostile act, at the very least the US would retaliate by shooting down Chinese satellites. “Freedom of Space” as it’s known has been tacitly recognised since the first spysats went up in the early 1960’s. While they mean that another country can see what you’re up to, you can also keep a close watch on them and make a Pearl Harbour style sneak attack impossible. So the major powers are content to put up with the nuisance because overall it helps to reduce tensions.

Not to mention that if one state had the right to shoot down a satellite, anyone in the path of a satellite's orbit would then have the theoretical right to shoot down said satellite.

Also, unless the satellite is in a equatorial geosynchronous orbit, it is impossible for any satellite to not overfly many counties with each orbit.

A satellite in a polar orbit will overfly EVERY country in the world over a period of a few days. It can’t be avoided.

Not likely. Only geosynchronous satellites can hang over east Asia and constantly look at what’s going on at one region of the world. But geosynchronous satellites need to be in a 36,000 km orbit and its sensors would therefore have resolution only 1% as good as normal reconnaissance satellite.

Normal low earth orbit reconnaissance satellite can typically only observe a region for few minutes when it passes over the region, and it will pass over a region only once in 12 hours. You will literally need several hundred satellites to maintain constant around the clock high resolution surveillance of a particular region on earth from,orbit. This is why there is still a strong need for drones and aircraft to maintain surveillance.

Chinese naval ships generally have two or three different kinds of SATCOMs which are clearly visible to be counted in any photo. The kinds are that matter, not the total number, as there are pairs of the same kind that are situated on different parts of the ship to allow for complete coverage, and there are singles of one kind because one is enough where it is situated to give enough coverage. Each unique kind of SATCOM would be accessing a different satellite constellation. What each SATCOM is for, what satellites constellation are being used or accessed...shrugs shoulders, I don't know. But they're there, and they are being used for some purpose. That would be at least two different satellite constellations, an X-band one and a Ku-band one. The smaller Ku-band SATCOM would be used for very high speed high bandwidth digital communications. Lately a third was added, purpose unknown, what new satellite constellation it is accessing, unknown. Its possible that the third dome can be for datalinking with high flying aircraft or drones, or a missile guidance link, as these applications all rely on a similar shaped antenna. But who knows. The third dome is not fitted on new ships, but appear on recent photos of older ships, which means the dome is new and is fitted on the ship when there is a chance the ship enters maintenance on a fitting pier.

It looks very much like a piece of PS work too me. The flat lighting on 101 just look wrong and inconsistent with other elements of the photo. The aspect ratio of the ship suggest the original picture depicts the ship as seen from a lower vintage point. So droppped in here at a point closer than the 052C, she ought to seem as if looked down from a steeper angle than the 052C, but instead she looks to be seen from a shallow angle than the 052C, do she looks like she is listing to her port. There is also cut and paste seam around her periphery.
