CV-18 Fujian/003 CATOBAR carrier thread

What we know for certain is that the haul number of Liaoning is 16 and she is a Type 001 carrier. The use of hull classification is not standardized in PLAN and some of the destroyer insignias use it in on an ad hoc basis.

We also know that the second carrier is associated with the number 002. It is unclear whether 002 refers to the hull number or her type. It is also unclear whether the hull number or name is going to be. Unless one has access to the Navy's internal information, any claim about on type of the second carrier more specific than that is speculation at this point. It would be correct to refer the second carrier as Carrier 002; however, referring it as Type 002 is no less speculative than Type 001A.

This also applies to the third carrier that is currently under construction. I am not aware of any photo close to the one taken during a 002 meeting.

That is wrong.
One Mod uses 002 for 003 (he changed the topic of this thread from 003 to 002).
Most people use 003 for 003.

I thought the matter has been settled that the Chinese do not use the classification of "Type" for their carriers, but rather the order of which it was built. For example, Liaoning would be called carrier number 1, the carrier soon to be commissioned in Dalian would be referred to as carrier number 2, while the carrier built in Shanghai as carrier number 3.

This is the normal way if you have a smaller crane that works independently in the area of a larger crane.

For what its worth, both the dredgers are now deep in the new basin, close to the module assembly area. If the the basin is behind schedule its possible they could dredge a narrow channel up to the assembly area to allow the hull modules to be removed prior to completing the dredging of the full width of the basin. That *could* explain why one of the hull modules has been moved to almost the waters edge.

Worth looking out for a submersible barge or heavy lift ship.

There are many reasons to reposition a module. If you want to load it, you can quickly move it all the way from the back to the front. An imminent shipment is a weak argument to move a module within the site little.

I agree. There is a lot to dredge in front of that module.

The big gantry is apparently used to lift small pieces from the side preparing area to the assembly area to be welded into big section.

1. The big section can then (like now) be moved away by "trailers on wheels".
2. Or, the big gantry can lift small pieces from the side area and move them to where the final section would be today, and weld them there without being moved by "trailers".

The reason of my original post is that it enables option Nr. 2 but Nr1 was chosen.

2. "Type 001A" is called 002 by PLAN at the launching event.
3. This forum is apparently wrong in calling the current constructing CV "Type 002".

I was not dismissing the usage of "Type", but the numbering "001A/002, 002/003".
